Usually, I am the first to say that I love having public transportation available. Yesterday, though, I was ready to kill someone because of it.

First issue: Got out of work at 5. Got to Kendall/MIT at about 5:15 or so. Waited a bit for the inbound red line, and got on the train even though it was jam-packed even worse than ususal. Thanks, Fenway Park. Got to Park Street, which was about as jam-packed as the train had been. Stood waiting for a B train. And waiting. And waiting. The platform just kept getting more and more crowded. Finally, after about 20 minutes to half an hour, a B line train appeared on the OPPOSITE platform. Everyone scrambled for it. We couldn't all fit. I was one of those who had to stay behind. I waited and waited for another B train, but no dice. So I jumped on a D train and got off at Kenmore, where I was actually able to catch a B train to my destination, BU East, fairly soon. Time to get from Kendall MIT to BU East: 1 hour, most of it in un-air conditioned, tightly packed spaces. Had to skip an actual dinner in favor of a Kashi Go Lean bar.

Second issue: Left dance class at 8:30. Was starving. Got on the B train inbound to Park. No trouble there. An outbound red line train showed up right away, too. Excellent! It even had functioning AC. My friends and I got on, and sat down. And sat. And sat. The doors to the car didn't close, and we didn't move. After maybe 5 minutes, the conductor shut off the train, and we had auxiliary lights and no more AC. They told us there was a fire at Charles/MGH, and that we'd be moving "shortly". Ha. Yes. Indeed. We waited about half an hour on the train. One of my friends got off and headed for the orange line instead. Finally, the conductor announced that we should go up to the street to catch shuttle buses. We did. Well, we went up to the street anyway. There was not a bus in sight. My friend was calling people to see if she could get a lift to Central. I tried calling [livejournal.com profile] pierceheart to see if he could pick me up from there, if a ride there was available. No dice: he'd been out having a few drinks with a friend. No prob, I don't want people driving while intoximacated. But I could still catch a cab, and it wouldn't be TOO expensive from Central. Then, finally, someone came up from the T and told us the red line was running again. We got on the train and headed home without further incident. Time to get from BU East to my place: 1 hour, 45 minutes, most of it in un-air conditioned spaces. I was ravenous by the time I got home, and made a half-assed low-fat quesadilla and ate some baked Doritos. Did NOT have the martini I wanted, though, but I did get a quick cool shower since I'd been sweating like a pig for hours.

Oy vey. MBTA, you have a lot of nerve continuously raising your fares and not improving your service. Sure, a few stops are getting renovated, but our actual ride is unreliable and frequently unpleasant. Thanks a bunch.
