No, I haven't yet melted from the heat! I do think I'm slowly starting to roast to a nice golden-brown, though, in spite of the fact that I will not go outside without recently-applied SPF30 sunscreen on all exposed bits. Jeez. I'm trying, here.
This past weekend, my desk at home bit the dust. Basically, there were two pieces of wood in an L-shape attached to the underside of the desk top and to the inside of the right side, that held a small drawer and a file drawer. These pieces of wood fell off. I could have tried gluing them back on with Gorilla Epoxy or something, but was dubious about that being more than an extremely temporary solution. I decided that since I'd probably have to replace it really soon anyway, and since it WAS about nine years old, and had seen me through three moves, I'd just get a new desk. I picked out a rather nice one from Staples, and put it together on Monday. It's about a foot longer than the old desk, but fits into the space where I had the old one. It has a small drawer (but bigger than the small drawer on the old desk), a file drawer, AND a cabinet with a movable shelf. This means I have more storage space to distribute my stuff, which in turn means that I don't have to put as much weight in the file drawer. Success!
Yesterday, I finally decided that I should get off my ass and actually plan ahead enough to use my crock pot for cooking. This morning, before I left, I turned on the crock pot with some cubed center-cut boneless pork chops (all visible fat trimmed), a can of rinsed and drained black beans, a chunked red pepper, some coarsely chopped red onion, some coarsely minced garlic, a sliced jalapeno, and a chunked tomato and a half, as well as salt, pepper, a bay leaf, and plenty of cumin. When I get home this evening, I'll throw on a pot of brown rice and make a salad. We should have plenty of leftovers, I think. I ought to make an effort to do crock pot stuff more often. I have a couple chicken breasts in the freezer too. I should thaw them, brown them quickly, and stick 'em in the crock pot with garlic, lemon, and herbs. See, I always suggest to people who are stumped for what to eat in the summer that they use their crock pots, because they don't heat up the house and give you options other than salad or sandwiches. But I'm notoriously bad on deciding what to make for dinner more than a few hours in advance. I'm an almost daily grocery shopper. I don't MIND that so much, but with all the other stuff I do in my life, I'd probably be happier if I saved myself some time. Less food buying/prep/cooking in the evenings would mean more time to, say, KNIT, instead of being too tired to do so after dinner, as I often am.
Speaking of knitting, I did finally pick up the project I'm working on again, but got VERY frustrated when I reached a certain portion of it. ( knitting rant under cut, ignore at will )
Anyway, other than that, things are good. I'm going to see C again tomorrow. We'll meet up on campus when he gets his CSA pickup, then he's going to bring me back to Lawrence where we're going to try a sushi restaurant he's been dying to go to, supposed to be one of the best in the Boston area. His wife's allergic to seafood, and he's only had the sushi from Whole Foods! His wife will be running out the door to go to a triathalon (but I should at least get to say hi), and we will be hanging with his son for the evening. And his dogs. :) And there will be beer and geekery and fun. :)
Oh, and I'm almost done with another dorodango. I need to put the final layer on this evening and polish it up. Yay!
