Gah!

So there's mold in my bathroom on the ceiling, in places neither I nor my roommate could reach without putting ourselves in danger of falling and getting broken. Ok. I can get that. But now there's mold growing on the wall and ceiling IN MY BEDROOM. It's under the paint on the ceiling, so it's causing it to bubble and peel in large pieces, right over my head when I sleep. The place is gross. I have no motivation to clean, because even when I do, it looks like shite because some stuff is just stained or ground-in. Even if it were all clean and spotless, it would still be falling apart. Even if I asked maintenance to do something, they'd just take forever and finally do a completely half-assed job. It's what they always do. Christ. I should have moved upstairs from [livejournal.com profile] lindalee, even if it meant having to pay double rent until I found someone to sublet this place. But my lease goes until the end of February. GAH!!!!!

I'm so screwed. I hate it here.

Got mold?

Oh, Rude Tableau, I feel your pain.

There's a chimney here that runs through the bedroom and down into the kitchen that has brown goo running down it. And then it leaked water. Yep. brown water that stained my dresser, and the teddy bear a friend gave me when I had my tonsils removed.

Went to LnT and bought a couple of shower curtains to cover the chimney in the bedroom.

I guess it's motivation to look for someplace better. On the other hand, I did have better in Roslindale, and look at what I put up with there. Choose your battles, I guess.

Yeah. *sigh*

I'll prolly have to find someplace newer but smaller, with a smaller kitchen. Bleah. I like my kitchen--it's the only room in the house I do like, and even that has an improperly set drawer.

Oh, thanks, but I really would need to move into an unfurnished place. I have so much stuff, and don't really want to sell it all.

Ok, mold sucks. It's a pain. But, if you have no serious respiratory issues, it's probably not a health threat. That said...

There are a couple of things you can do for relatively cheap.

First, spray the area with bleach and water. I would try one part bleach to two parts water. Be sure to cover your stuff, though. You don't want white spots on your duvet cover.

Then, after it dries, spray the area with a solution of water, lavender oil and lemongrass oil. That acts as a disinfectant and has a pleasing scent.

If it continues (if the bathroom upstairs is leaking, it probably will. You likely have a leaky pipe in the wall. Who's your management company?), anyway, if it continues, have someone take you to Home Depot and get KILZ. A small can will do. It's not expensive, and it prevents mold from breaking through.

I hope this helps.

Well, the problem with getting rid of the mold is that I will have to find someone who has a big ladder, bring it to my place, and stand on it to scrub my ceilings. They are very high. And I don't know if a ladder will fit in the bathroom. Even if it does, the tub is in the way so I couldn't reach most of the mold in there. In my bedroom, I might be able to move my bed out of the way enough. But even then, all the paint is still peeling. A chunk about 6" square fell off last night in my bedroom.

If maintenance doesn't fix the problem, call ISD. The Inspectional Services Department can do wonders to motivate a landlord, and mold is considered a health hazard.

Yeah, I know the stuff that will kill the mold.

I am worried about the paint crumbling off my walls and ceiling. No amount of bleach will fix that. And I don't trust maintenance to fix it properly either.

My parents had a mold problem due to last year's wet nasty summer. You do need to get that off the ceiling if you can. Can you vacuum with an attachment? Can you reach with a mop while on a standing on a chair? Do you know someone taller then us that would?

High humidity can cause this (like bathrooms) so can you borrow a dehumidifier and see if it helps? Or can you run an air conditioner? Or use fans to circulate air and open all windows?

If the mop works try using a bucket to put this stuff on the ceiling. I would wear a raincoat and rubber gloves with elastics on your wrists so the liquid doesn't run back onto your sleeves...
1) Commercial mildew removers or Mildewcide. Home Depot... And this stuff called Red Cross Spray (CVS)
2) Washing soda or tri-sodium phosphate (available at grocery or Home Depot). Use 5 tablespoons per gallon of water.
3) 1/4 cup (2 ounces) of liquid bleach for 1 gallon of water. But this might cause more problems with spotting. Be careful to open the windows or the fumes will be too much. and wear rubber gloves. Be careful not wash with a cleaning product with ammonia and then use the bleach.
