On various dating-related websites, I often hear people complain that when they write to people, they don't get messages back, and that's so rude, and why can't they just be friendly or at least say thanks but no thanks? Wanna know why we don't write back if we're not interested in dating you? I'll tell ya why.

1. Person e-mails me with a "hi, I'm just looking to meet some new friends, read your profile, blah blah" that's pretty decent.
2. I e-mail person back, saying, "hi, I'm not up for LDRs but am always happy to make new friends, talk talk blah blah". Nice long e-mail.
3. Person e-mails me back with, "This may be totally off-topic, but you are so hot. Just wanted you to know that, that's all...seriously." That's all he wrote.

Whatever.

The reason we don't write back if we're not potentially interested in more than friendship is that it seems like 99% of the time, even those saying they're only seeking friendship tend to be seeking more than that. Or just randomly drooling over profile pictures.

Fortunately, that's not ALWAYS the case. Steps 1 and 2 above also occurred with another person on the same site. So far, that person has kept up a lively correspondence without hitting on me or focusing solely on my looks. That's perfectly cool. But people like that first guy make me reluctant to go to step 2 more often than not.

Ah well. Lucky for me not all people are like that, and the ones I meet in real life are very rarely like that. This is a good thing.

And on a totally unrelated note, [livejournal.com profile] pierceheart is the Grill God. Two whole chickens cooked on the big-ass grill last night, along with some grilled corn on the cob. Mmmmmm. SO good.

These are always fun. I may have to do another when I have more time, later. But I have training in a few minutes.

1. Do you really make wishes when you blow out the candles on your cake?

Yes. I do. Silly, perhaps, but I do it anyway.

2. Have any of the wishes ever come true, if yes?

You know, I honestly can't remember a single wish I've made on birthday candles. That's odd.

3. How do you feel about birthdays? (e.g., love the attention, just another day, don't want anyone to know my real age, etc.)

Let's be honest: I love the attention. I love the fact that most of my friends will make an effort to come to my party, and gods know I love hanging out with all of them! I love parties in general.

4. Tell us a favorite gift you've received, or something you'd really like for your next birthday.

I think one of the very best was a set of three single malt Islay scotches from [livejournal.com profile] pierceheart, though I've received a lot of lovely gifts.

5. What flavor cake?

Chocolate, baby. It always used to be carrot when I was a kid, but nowadays it's chocolate. Mmm.
