Ack! Arisia!
Jan. 20th, 2005 01:39 pmSo I'm going to register online. What do I WEAR??? Where do I go to do the FUN stuff? Does anyone have any recommendations for "everyone you'll know there goes to THIS particular thing every year, so you should make sure you go too, and here's where and when to find it!" stuff? I don't want to just wander aimlessly and find out later I missed all the fun. And what do I WEAR???
Yes, I'm a bit apprehensive about this. It's one thing to go to a place full of people I don't know. That's not a problem. I like that. But going to a place full of people I don't know, where people I DO know are off in another world...that's what I hate. So I really want to hook up with some of you there!

Date: 2005-01-20 06:45 pm (UTC)I usually feel clueless when there, which is why I usually don't go.
If you want a buddy to wander around and be clueless with, I'm game. :-)

Date: 2005-01-20 06:57 pm (UTC)1-the Art Show. Limited hours, but open till noon on Sunday--plenty of time. There will be drek, but there will be great stuff, too.
2-Masquerade. Hasn't been as good in recent years, but some of the costumes and presentations are great. It's a big event on Sat night.
3-Vampyre Ball/Icebreaker Dance. This is an "enh" thing, depends on the year, but it can be fun to get to know new people and show off your belly dancing skills.
4-Huckster's Room/Row. Open most of the time, fun stuff to buy.
5-Parties. Look for postings. People wander through these all night, some will suck, others will be bonding experiences. I'll get you into the Rocket Fuel party, if you like.
6-Panels(whatever's on the program). More ways to meet new friends, and learn more about an interest, but some are dead boring.
7-Belly dance jam. Hard for me to follow live drumming, but there can be good dancers there to watch.
Just take a highlighter with you and mark up the program--it's all on there. And go to the "So it's your first con" panel at 7pm Friday (if you're there) for more hints.
What to wear: whatever you like within legal and practical limits. Garb, belly dance, fetish attire are all pretty common there, as are jeans and t-shirts with fun sayings. You'll walk around a lot, so good shoes.

Date: 2005-01-20 07:55 pm (UTC)Weeeelll...this place makes theirs a bit weaker than other recipes, from what I can tell. They water it down to make it drinkable and to spread it out a bit.

Date: 2005-01-20 08:07 pm (UTC)maybe i'm a lighweight where rocket fuel is concerned. :)
Re: You asked...
Date: 2005-01-20 07:32 pm (UTC)afaik recipe
29 gallons of 'Everclear'(tm)
1 gallon of dry ice (~10lbs)
1 bottle of a green, hopefully minty liquor
put Everclear into keg
put dry ice into keg
mix to get rid of impurites that have accessible freezing points
(hint: not alchohol)
remove impurities
pour in bottle of green stuff for coloring and hint of taste
serve in container that can take really cold temperatures
remember that since it is really cold that the human body does not register the alchohol till it warms up, so keep your consumption to reasonable levels (hint: three in an hour will hit you like a Mac truck on the Mass Pike at the hour and a quarter mark)
hope this helps some
ps - the recipe may have changed, but this is about what it was back in the day when I had no hand whatsoever in making it or suggesting anything that would have hinted at the human consumption of it as I no longer gamed with those guys from MIT at that point in time and you could not prove it if I was anyways.

Date: 2005-01-20 08:14 pm (UTC)it's a hypergolic drink
Date: 2005-01-20 08:19 pm (UTC)Grain alcohol, and a lemon lime frozen drink mix, and dry ice.

Re: You asked...
Date: 2005-01-20 07:53 pm (UTC)Of course. I don't know that they ever turn people away, but the organizer always handed me the info as a sort of invite--it is a private party (with alcohol, it has to be)--so if I showed up with people it was never a problem. And honestly, you two have your invites right there on your chests. ;) Girls with cleavage don't get turned away from the door.

Date: 2005-01-20 08:27 pm (UTC)Blatant discrimination, I tell ya.
We need to get some women running one of these, and guys in kilts don't get turned away.

Were you a tagalong on the fourth of july?
No.
Not in my book.

And which would you be more swayed by, if you were a bouncer?

Date: 2005-01-20 07:01 pm (UTC)As for what to do, listen to
Other than that, yeah, the dances. The Masquerade is fun to watch. There will be some young Fast Track kids up there, too, doing their Kamikaze Costuming thing - very cute.
And find panels. Shop. Visit Kirsten (Fabricdragon - you won't be able to miss her, her signs are up everywhere).

Date: 2005-01-20 09:00 pm (UTC)I don't do any of the con events, apart from occasionally wandering through the vendor floor, but I usually try to dress how I normally would for a party (leathers and such generally).
