So I wrote to [livejournal.com profile] fangirl715 today to tell her I'll take the place. Yay!!! :D

I'm all excited now. A new, NICE apartment will make my life so much better. Oh yes.

She gave me the name of a moving company, who I found is still in existence. They sound good. But my mom said it would probably be better to go the U-Haul route, because it's so much less expensive.

Er...I can't drive a U-Haul truck.

Anyone interested in helping me out with moving sometime at the end of this month? There will be food and drink in it for you. And my undying gratitude.

Congrats!

I'm looking forward to seeing the new place.

Yes! I'm looking forward to having you there! :)

BTW...I will talk to you about rent and stuff when I've talked to Robin about it.

Okay. Checked out her profile, and laughed: she is friends with a couple of people I know, but not very well.

I laughed, because i went out on a date with one of them. I can see the "um, hi . . ." if I ever run into her.

Butting in...

Yep, the world is too damn small, isn't it? :-) [livejournal.com profile] cthulhia knew who you were when I told her who was moving in, although she didn't quite remember badseed, alas. I do know [livejournal.com profile] mizdarkgirl, who actually has the same birthday as me, a few of the netgoths, and a fair amount of the Suspects/Elboid folk. (That's the problem with this crowd, you know--once you know a few of the susboid/netgoth/poly/BDSM/geek/SCAdian/MIT/fannish folks, you find yourself somehow connected to all of them...even if you've never slept with any of them. (Now why do I suddenly have this mental image of "Six Degrees of Fangirl715" in my head?)

No, I don't think I've ever met [livejournal.com profile] cthulhia. My boy knows her though. :)

Hmm, I met Julia through friendster (as someone I might like to date, from the search engine) and had already been talking to [livejournal.com profile] pookfreak from there as well. Ended up on one date with Julia, and then a few more with Jeanie. Never knew any of the Suspects/Elboids, only a few LSE people through Jeanie on a date (to go see "Pirates of the Carribean", with JB and a few others . . .) as well as one OPN (that was Jeanie's goodbye party, where I met [livejournal.com profile] anotherjen, as well as someone who was interviewing with the Coven I WAS interviewing with)

Yes, small world. Even smaller when I find out that Jeanie knows one of my favorite authors.

As for the six degrees things, if you look in my profile, you will find a link to "how are you connected" I have never found anyone in LJ I wasn't in sex degrees of, yet.

Oh my gods, now THAT is a Freudian slip if I've ever heard one!!! :P

no Uhaul?

You can't drive at all? Most self-moving trucks for rent will be automatic, if that's what you're concerned about.

Dunno about my plans at the end of the month, but I could probably give you a day.

I know how to operate a standard transmission. I can't say, "I can drive stick" though. I can't really drive automatic either. I haven't gotten behind the wheel of a car in about three years. I hardly drove before that. I've never driven a large vehicle. I would have to basically re-learn to drive if I were to do something like that.

Thanks for the offer of help. :)

So...what kind of food can we expect from it? Redbones? Hmmm? ;)

I used movers for my last 2 moves, and I will say that they are worth every penny. Really. They're professional, good at what they do, and fast.

Date: 2005-02-01 07:22 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] badseed1980.livejournal.com
Yeah, I know. I think I will try to persuade my parents. They said they'd pay for the actual moving, and I will offer to put in some of the money.

I'm sorta kinda backing her up, here. I ended up feeling like I'd been quoted too low a price...I ended up paying just over $500 when I thought it would stay in the $250-350 range, and so I felt a bit taken...but as she said--they're extremely fast and efficient, should you go with professionals.
What would have taken twice the people (if I asked friends) two or three times the amount of time to do, they did with three guys and one guy very good at doing Stuff Tetris in the truck. And they helped me set stuff up.
In the end, far less stressful than doing it myself. (I used Dragonfly Movers, if it makes a difference)

Date: 2005-02-01 07:31 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] badseed1980.livejournal.com
Yes, Dragonfly is also who Robin used. She said "If you want your stuff carried by cute goth guys at a decent price, use them!" :)

From: [identity profile] lindalee.livejournal.com
I used Gentle Giant (http://www.gentlegiant.com/), and they were very upfront with me about how we were running over the expected time, and they pushed themselves to be as fast as possible to keep the cost down, to the point where I had to say to them, "Look, I understand that you want my answer to that question quickly, and I appreciate your efforts to keep my costs down, but trust me, I am very stressed, and at this exact moment, I would rather pay you more money in exchange for the peace of mind I will get from taking a few moments to get an answer for you."

So, in my last move, they did run over the expected time (I had truly insane amounts of stuff, and hadn't finished my packing)...but still I say that it was worth every penny. In fact, it probably would have been worth twice as many pennies. Oh yeah.

You and a couple of friends can still help them carry stuff downstairs and up again, which would decrease the time that they're working. Let them carry the big or tricky stuff, and just carry down some boxes that are easily manageable.

Make sure to ask if they start charging you by the hour from the time they arrive, or from the time they leave their garage. I got bitten by that one once.

just me-tooing what linda said. i used gentle giant to move from the basement apartment in east arlington to the current condo in the heights. those guys were fast, professional, courteous, decent, helpful, etc.etc. moved furniture where i wanted it, wrapped up the tv in blankets so it would be safe, i was quite pleased.

Oh, hey...that wasn't just me, huh? Somehow I feel better. And they overcharged me, damnit.

I need to get it shipped to my parents so's I can give it to you first thing we get to your home . . .

I'm sure you are.

But I don't want to mail it to you, and I want to be able to give it to you at your home, so, the only way I can do it is this . . .

Congrats on the new place, Badseed!

By the way, this is Sean aka mortalcoil. Thought i'd stop by and say hi, now that i've set up an LJ. Had one a while back, but excessive drama drove me away. Never thought anyone could bring me back into the cult...errrrr...i mean fold.

I just hope the apartment and I live up to whatever expectations I've engendered... :-)

As for U-Haul...DON'T DO IT. SERIOUSLY. JUST DON'T. If necessary, [livejournal.com profile] cthulhia and I can tell you, at length and in detail, all about the Great U-Hell Adventure of 1997, e.g., my move back to Boston from Athens, GA ( otherwise also known as "never do a major cross-country move during Mercury retrograde, because Murphy's Law will bitchslap you so hard you may never quite recover") It's the main reason she will never, EVER help me move EVER AGAIN, and I can't honestly blame her. If you HAVE to rent a truck, get one of the other companies, but for the love of God/your diet(ies) of choice, don't use U-Haul!

Fortunately, my parents are cool with paying for a mover for a birthday present. W00t!
