I heard from a rep at one of my temp agencies today. There's an HR position at a local college that starts Tuesday. It's supposed to last 4-6 weeks with a possibility of permanent employment. It doesn't pay much as a temp job (not sure about the permanent salary), but it's something, and it would last a while. I told him to go ahead and put in my resume. Apparently he's sending mine and one or two others, so I have a fairly good shot at getting it. :)

Colleges rarely pay what you'd make in the private sector. But... it is steady work.

I dunno...looking at the salary ranges for some jobs at other schools, they looked similar to what I was seeing for the same sort of job descriptions in private companies. Granted, they weren't state schools.

State schools pay better than private. And they come with FABULOUS benefits.

Really good benefits! They are union jobs, meaning better representation and rights. Universities may not pay as well as the private sector, but your workload will be lighter some times of the year, secure jobs, better benefits, steady schedule, ability to shift to other departments/positions, training opportunities and TUITION discount. Say you may want to take an archeology class for fun? Some depts. will allow to shift your time to accomodate it.

Discount? I don't pay tuition. It's waived.

And not all university staff jobs are unionized. Mine's not. I'm "unclassified civil service". In other words, state job with lots of rules about my employment, lots of protections, no union dues.

I know Harvard's unionized.

So are we. But not *every* job. Mine's not.
