Don't think of it as "not good enough," but rather "and there was someone else who was also very good."
I've done a lot of interviewing, and this is very often the case. The company ends up with multiple people, all of whom seem like they'd be a good fit, and they somehow need to pick one over the others.
There will be other jobs, and I'm sure you'll be able to find an excellent one just for you.
and, it's job hunting. this will happen again. it is the nature of this particular beast.
i am SO sorry. remember when i interviewed w/ the world famous architect? yeah, a part of me still mourns not getting that particular job.
if you are able, it can be helpful to ask what caused the other person to be chosen over you. there are ways of phrasing this, like 'i appreciate your time, etc, is there anything you can suggest i do to improve my chances in a similar interview in the future?' i've interviewed so much now (over all the years) that i generally have a really good idea how it turned out as soon as i leave the interview, so i haven't asked this lately, if ever.
also your temp agency may be helpful w/ going over your interview technique. not a help for this particular spot, but for future use.
also, i truly believe that there is a number of interviews/job applications i need to do before i get a job. i never know what that number is, but each interview/application brings me closer to the goal. so even when i don't get a job, i am moving forward. i'm serious. i get better each time, i've made contacts, etc. etc.
one more thing - being an extremely strong candidate is GOOD.
these folks generally don't give any praise if they don't mean it. little reason for them to lie about that, they have no ties to you. they don't hafta tell you they thought you were extremely strong for the spot. they did (or they told your recruiter, whoever). that does actually MEAN something, though it seems like small consolation at the moment.
