State of the Seed address
May. 11th, 2006 09:42 amOk, I'm sick of this weather. More specifically, I'm sick sick SICK of what it does to my hair. Ugh. I'm a frizz-bomb. And no, it's not an issue of curly or wavy. Those are cool. This is just frizzy.
Last night when I was at the laundromat, my temp agency (the good one) called and said they'd found a long-term position for me in the development office at MIT, assisting the director. It's actually a temp-to-perm possibility. I doubt I'll decide to go perm: I'd really rather do something NON-admin for a permanent job. Well, a little admin work would be ok if it was in a department where I'd like to be in a non-admin role someday. But asking rich folks for money? Nah. If I wanted to do that, I'd become a gold-digging hussy and jockey for a trophy wife position. Anyway, though, this is a steady paycheck, and I'm hoping it pays a bit more than the minimum PSG wage I've been making lately. It probably does. I neglected to ask.
The woman I'm assisting forgot I was coming in today, and will be in meetings until 11, so I'm just sitting at her desk, going online, and answering the phone. Oh, and reading a REALLY interesting article in the NY Times about this Amazonian hunter-gatherer tribe, basically stone-age technology level, who have left their ancestral homeland in the middle of the jungle and sought out civilization. A few of their people had already done so, and are currently living on government handouts and doing nothing with their lives. The new batch of folks are at least planning to start farming and selling their crops to get by. That's cool. It'll be interesting to see what happens.
Taking this new assignment means I'm missing out on the other one I was supposed to start tomorrow and stay at for a couple of weeks. I'm a little sad about that: that one was HR and recruiting-related, which would have rocked. But...this is a steady position for 4-6 weeks minimum, and I've enjoyed working at MIT thus far. But someone tell me: WHY do they find it so hard to, like, label their buildings with the numbers everyone uses to give directions and address mail? I had to ask several different people if they knew which building was Building 4. Turns out it's this ginormous one, connected to a couple others, and set back behind a big courtyard whose hedges are too tall. And if they're going to tell you, "go to this building", why can't they say, "go to number Blah-blah, Memorial Drive?" Oy. But I found it eventually. Cell phone reception sucks here, so if anyone tries to call me while I'm working, don't be too surprised if I don't answer: it might not even ring.
Tonight I'm at the Athenian Corner. I'm still a bit nervous. I hope I do well. My nails are painted to match my opalescent bedlah, and I have someone lending me a cover-up so I can eat and not have to change into street clothes and then back into dance clothes for our group finale. Mmm...maybe I'll have calamari again.
I'm really looking forward to this weekend. True, I'll be missing the damned B&D Ball (AGAIN), but I'll be going to RI to hang out with the ever-hip
j4yx0r and to see my dear ol' mom and dad. If my mom doesn't like the slippers I made her, I'll TOTALLY guilt-trip her. Oh man, I miss Trinity Brewhouse. And Haven Brothers. In spite of the fights that have happened or almost happened there. It's been too long.
And now I realize I'm rambling, so I will hush and read some more of that article.
