Terry Pratchett's Discworld series, the book is "Night Watch" (I think). The lilac represents a brief revolution in the streets of Ankh-Morpork which happened right about when the lilacs were blooming. If you were there, you wore the lilac.
Towels are a reference to Douglas Adams' Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy series. As to why the references are combined, I'm not clear on. Maybe this is the anniversry of Adams' death. :( Died too young, that one.
