This afternoon, my cell phone was working fine. I texted [livejournal.com profile] pierceheart with it at about 2:15 to tell him I was going to a movie with [livejournal.com profile] geoogo, and turned it off when I got into the theater. I got out of the movie at a little after 5, and turned the phone on again. It was fine. I came home, and thought, "Oh, my phone was low on batteries. I'll plug it in and charge it up." So I did, and read for a bit. Then I realized it was getting late and I hadn't yet heard from [livejournal.com profile] pierceheart saying he was home. I went to call him, but my phone was dark. Oh, no problem, I must have turned it off at some point. Pressed the power button.

Nothing.

Unplugged the phone and tried again. Nothing. Re-plugged it and tried again. Nothing. Tried my other charger. Nothing. The charger is giving power to the phone. A few of the buttons light up when I plug it in. But not all of them: just a few that are close to where the charger plugs into the phone. But it's NOT TURNING ON. Within the space of an hour, my cell phone broke. For no apparent reason. It's just dead.

FUCK.

I cannot afford a new phone right now. This one is NOT that old, either. I have no idea what I'm going to do. *sigh*

EDIT: apparently the problem was that for some reason, the charger connection was faulty, and it ended up DRAINING the battery instead of recharging it. I unplugged it and plugged it in for about the tenth time, and THAT time the connection took. It's charging now, and has charged enough for me to turn the phone on. Thank the gods.

Does the phone use a Lithium Ion battery?

Lithium Ion batteries are great in many ways, they can hold a heck of a lot of energy and recharge well. But they do have one serious drawback, that being they degrade with age. The lifespan of a good lithium ion battery can be as little as two years before they simply die. Even on a store shelf the batteries "age". So your best bet if you ever go to purchase lithium ion batteries is to get them from a store which receives continual shipments, so you are assured your battery hasn't been shelved for half of it's useable life span.

I hope this helps you sweetie :)

I don't know if you saw the edit, but it did end up recharging. I'm not sure why there was a bad connection with the charger, but it's ok now. The phone isn't even ONE year old yet, and I doubt the battery's dead yet. :)

If you can get to the places where the charger and phone make contact, try to clean them with a bit of rubbing alcohol. I have success with this with my home phone (which requires this attention every month or two).

Yeah, I've wiped them down before, but not with alcohol. I'll give that a shot.
