I've been bubbling along in a great mood all day today, and just a few minutes ago, I realized that one of my opal earrings was missing.

Crap.

I retraced the steps I took on my lunch break, and found nothing. Brushed out my hair and shook out my shirt in the office. Nothing. This is the third pair of opal earrings I've had this happen to. One wants to stay with me but the other doesn't. Unfortunately, none of the misfits match up. If I ever get another pair of opal earrings, I'm going to try to get some that exactly match one of the misfits I have so I can have a spare. Blah.

I put up a notice with a little drawing on it on one of the bulletin boards in the hallway. I hope someone finds it.

Well, I'm still in a good mood, just a little deflated now.

*shrug*

I'm not sure that half of a $35 pair of earrings justifies the effort of doing that, when I'm not sure it would really do me much good. I alerted the cleaning lady, so if she sweeps it up, she'll let me know. With any luck it'll turn up. At least these were something I bought for myself instead of a present from someone I love! That's one good thing.

I don't know what kind of earring they were, but if they were dangles, you could easily turn the misfits into pendants. Not that it makes losing nice earrings better.

Um. Look! A belly dancing baby (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AVAbLm4EaIk) to brighten your mood.

Belly dancing baby cuteness!

I might be able to make them into pendants. They're a little on the small side. I might actually have lost one of the misfits, though--the one gold one--but that was actually the ugliest stone out of all of them. The other two...maybe I could hang them both down vertically from the middle of a necklace as a double pendant, one below the other. Possibly. I do want to do SOMETHING with them, which is why I'm keeping them!

Have some spirit gum? If they're rather small, you could make a pretty bindi out of one, using a stronger adhesive than eyelash glue--and spirit gum's pretty strong.

But I like the double pendant idea. Or...turn them into charms for your navel ring? If perfect size, probably!

I do have spirit gum--I use it for my pasties. They might be a leetle big for bindis, though! I'll find a use for them, somewhere.

Get another piercing in one of your ears--- then you'll always have a place to wear your "misfit" earrings!

Are they hook-in ones, or butterfly backs?

Ah... I think I see a theme here.

Maybe you should get some that have a catch, or that are butterfly-backed?

Yeah, I know, but it's hard to find those. I'll have to get jewelry supplies and change out the hooks for ones with clasps.

You don't have to change French hooks--I prefer them, too, and have the same hair catching on them problem. Just go to an accessory store like Claire's and get a packet of earring backs--the ones for hooks are usually clear nylon, and a bit too snug at first, but they help a lot.

Huh. Cool. I shall do that next time I buy a pair of earrings with French hooks! I think all the rest of mind aren't, though, at the moment.

I was once told Opals are unlucky for anyone not born in October. Maybe they're just mad you're not a Libra/Scorpio.

According to my SO's father, who makes jewellery semi-profesisonally, that's because opals are very soft stones, and absorb water easily too: it's really easy to crack them.

Which is why I take super-good care of the stones. But the earrings catch in my hair, dammit! :(
