OMG, [livejournal.com profile] j4yx0r is teh r0xx0r!!! :)

He just informed me that he got a call from the person who's checking my references, and he gave me a glowing recommendation.

If I get that job, next time that boy's in town I'm buying him a beer. :D

Incidentally, behold my new Bostonian icon!

=)

I really hope you get it. I was a little groggy because she called before I had my coffee, but I'm sure I did fine. I might have been a little rambly. I remember saying something along the lines of, "She's upbeat, positive and cheerful - but not too much so. You know, in that really annoying way? You know those types. Definitely not Laura. Aaaaaanyway..."

So, Lensman tells me that we've actually met. Or should have. erikjmeyers last bbq party, where he had the book giveaway. We were there, and so were you and pierceheart. My bad, I tend not to go up to people I don't know and introduce myself, even if we know people in common. So I sat and caught up with the few people I do know.

yup. I useta be a needlepointer. Knitting drove me nuttier than I already was. Though, hmmmm, I AM looking for someone who can knit/crochet a copy of a vest, with sleeves (I guess you'd call that a sweater?) with very open work lacing that kind of looks like chainmaille. I bought it in Chinatown, knew it would never fit me (Im a 2X) but hoped one day to either diet into it or find someone who could approximate it. Got any hints? :-P (See the dangers of friending me? Muahahahahahah!)

oh, yeh, and. . . .

If they like you personally, you could be missing all kinds of refs and they'll still hire you. If they don't, then you could be perfect for the job on paper and it don't matter, no way. It's clear she already likes you since you got all the way up to the Chair for an interview. Which you wouldn't have if your future boss's boss didn't like you enough to send you up the ladder. I tell ya, I'm betting on this.

MIT's not a bad place to work, all in all. Decent benefits. Ask me about who to sign on with in Medical and who to avoid when the time comes for you to find a PCP.

hey, i've been at MIT for 16 yrs, and hate my PCP. so, who should i switch to? i never see my PCP, i go to the nurse practitioners. they've been wonderful.

(and i was at the book party too! it is a very small world here.)

Well, most of those listed NOW are strangers to me. I like my guy, David Diamond: personable, very thorough, and doesn't give me an attitude when I harrass him about the same thing over and over. As he's chief of meds now he may not be taking on more clients. I hear Shiang is great. Avoid Noemi Pedraza unless you like gruff personalities. In general, I steer clear of the men with white hair, or those newly minted from Harvard Med School, as they tend to have attitudes and never second guess themselves, they are Gods in their own minds. Not good for a woman.

There weren't any gynos there for a while, but now the OB/GYN department has a permanent home, I'm seeing Wasserman in October, she's chief of obgyn (even though she's only been out o' med school for 13 years), so I'll report on her when I know what's what. Otherwise most of the gynos seem to be new.

You can see md/rn bios here. (http://web.mit.edu/medical/s-staff.html)

mit PCPs

ah, see, my PCP is Shiang. maybe it's just an issue of us, we clash or something. i don't clash w/ many people at all. i could try her again, though it would be the third time i've tried, i think.

oh well. the nurse practitioners did an excellent job w/ my bout of salmonella this spring (took a while to diagnose, but that wasn't their fault). and they do really KNOW me now. nothing like staying over two nights for getting the nurses to take notice of you. :)

Ahh. I've never had Shiang, but my office mate has and really likes her because she says she's on top of things. She does admit she's not the most personable, my she'd rather have good care than a great personality, says this is business, not a social relationship.

I agree with you about the NPs, I've never had a bad one who wasn't thorough. And if you ever had to stay overnight, you really get taken care of. Not at all like a hospital, where everything is "In a minute. . . " and four hours later they still haven't come back. I am SO unhappy Delores Vidal recently left: she was THE most awesome.

Oh, thanks for the benefits tips! Yeah, having previously worked at a VERY tiny company with few benefits and few holidays, MIT's benefits sound almost like a dream come true. :)
