My parents had their dog Pokey put down today. Now, for years, Pokey's been mean and unfriendly to me (and most people) most of the time, aside from a five to ten minute period each time I arrived at my parent's place when she frantically wagged her tail at me. So it's not like I'm losing a dog I've loved for years. But she was really sweet when she was a puppy. She was sick: it was a disease of the adrenal and pituitary glands that was making her age faster than she should. She was pretty miserable. Poor thing. I wish I had some pictures of her to post here, because she was way too cute once upon a time.
Apparently, my father's friend's dad (John) died the other night as well, and an older (in his 90s) cousin (Sarkis) of my mom's passed last night. Both lived long, full lives. I only met John a few times, but he was a nice old guy. I never met Sarkis.
Anyway, all this happens while a lot of people I know and care about are mourning the loss of a dear friend who passed last night. I never met him, but I think my connection to those who did know him is making me feel it more than I would otherwise.
So I'm a bit melancholy right now. Not awfully bad, but just...sort of somber. I'll get some candles tonight to light for the departed and their loved ones.
And it's a night in tonight for me, after I go grocery shopping. A quiet night at home will be welcome, I think.
