Last night I tried to find myself a good pair of winter boots. I went to DSW since they're usually cheaper there. Now, there were some boots there that were Serious Boots. You know--waterproof, insulating to -25F, good rubber soles, the whole nine yards. Most of the boots, though, were "fashion" boots for winter, which looked like the offspring of a mukluk and a lhasa apso: shaggy fur everywhere, with the occasional poodle-like pompom. Gah. Some of them even had four-inch heels ferfucksake. Among the Serious Boots, there was a single pair I really liked: they were cute as well as Serious, in a nice simple black look. They met with my price criteria ($100), and I almost bought them. But I REALLY wanted Serious Boots that came up to mid-calf, and these were just above the ankle. That means cold legs if there's a deep snow. Meh. Only the lhasa apsos were tall. :(

Ah, bootses.

I wear my 23-year-old, leather, steel toed hiking boots. 2 pair of socks, and I'm good to do. If I'm not working and am wearing jeans/pants, I throw on long Johns. If I'm working, I use the 2 pair of socks, and I'm usually fine from house to car to office, etc.

Hope you find somethign that will work for you. The Lhasa Apsos sound revolting. What good is a 4-inch heal in a snow storm or on ice? Gah!

Yeah, but your look is quirky enough to pull it off and have it look whimsical. Me, I'd just look like I was trying to look like a fashion plate and failing miserably. :)

I very much wanted to get those shaggy fur boots for Amy for Christmas but I was afraid she would punch me in my throat. :(

Try the sportsmans guide website or catalog. They recently had a steal on suede sherpa boots.

PS the fashion mukluks being sold now are fakes. Circa 1960's I had a real pair, seal leather and goat fur. I bet they are still in my closet. Wore them for 30 yrs at least.

You should see if you can make a trip up to REI in Reading (http://www.rei.com) we are having a big winter clearance sale because the weather has been so warm. We have some really nice stuff if your looking for a serious winter boot.

Well, you could go with the red-headed stepchild of fashion: a pair of Uggs. :)

I've been thinking about it. They have some quite simple ones that are at least water-resistant and very very warm, AND moisture-wicking. I may well do that, especially if I can find someone retailing them cheaper than the company website, which I probably can.

I had the same ridiculous prob last year because the soles are coming apart from my old ones which have survived more than one huge snow storm and now are no longer water proof. I wound up going on ebay.

Good call. That's so funny there's RSS (Repeat Snarfage Syndrome). I better get the Windex.
