vervain13 came over for dinner last night. Sweetie that he is, he brought flowers. Aww. I'd planned on making him a basil-rose martini, but somehow neglected to buy basil. I was also out of olives for a dirty martini. I racked my brains for another idea, and came up with what eventually became a blueberry-thyme martini. I mashed fresh blueberries, sugar, and dried thyme (though I'd have preferred fresh), added 2 jiggers of Hendricks and one of Noilly Pratt, stirred, and strained into the martini glass. It came out a delicate lavender colour, and
vervain13 loved it, so I felt quite good about that little success. I will have to have one myself, sometime.
The callaloo recipe I had didn't seem great. It didn't provide enough liquid (I ended up adding two more cups), and it was a bit bland. I added allspice because it seemed West Indian-appropriate, and that made it pretty darn good. The stuff only ended up being 9 points for a full HALF the recipe, so I was actually stuffed after about 7 points worth. Sweet. That meant that even with dessert, I had 3 points left at the end of the day, which is frankly pretty necessary, considering how badly I ate on Wednesday.
vervain13 and I had some good conversation about stuff going on in our lives. I think we both needed it. It felt good both to vent and to wax ecstatic. :) Friends with whom you can share all your hopes and fears as easily and plainly as if you were talking to yourself in the mirror are a wonderful thing indeed.

I have a Rubbermaid container that I think is yours, too.
I should perhaps make some more pesto for freezing.

Date: 2007-08-03 08:02 pm (UTC)The depths of my gratitude for your hospitality last night are unfathomable. The blueberry thyme martinis were utterly amazing and the callaloo was simply the perfect comfort food. I meant to post about this today, but I had to make a supply run to Salem and just now got back...only to have to run out again here in a few minutes. Your indulgence with all my stressed ramblings is a much appreciated gift and one of the shining jewels of your friendship. Thank you again for such a delightful and memorable evening.
*BIG hugs*
David :-)
