I'm sure you all noticed by now I'm in the market for a new belly dance costume. I'm curious: what colour should I get? There are a variety I've been thinking of. It may all depend on what's available and how much the costumes cost, but there are some choices that give me a variety of colour options. Now, for the purposes of this poll, I'm thinking of the colour of the bra and belt (or bra and skirt, if that's the kind of costume I get). If it's a bra and belt costume, I can choose any colour skirt and veil to go with it. If it's bra and skirt, I would just get a veil that complimented the bra and skirt. So. I have eight colours listed here. If you feel like it, rank them in order of preference (1 to 8, try not to repeat a number) as to how good you think they'd look on me. If you think another colour altogether would be better than any of these, go ahead and comment with it. Sorry for the long poll, but if you're bored and want to click things, have at it!

I would not ever again purchase a black costume. It just isn't as compelling on stage. I now own 2. The black/gold one isn't so bad because if I wear a gold skirt, it comes across as a gold costume. But the all black with silver costume just doesn't have that POW factor.

I think the brilliant red looks best on you, as with the skirt you wore for Soleil D'Egypt. I think dark red and dark green are probably nice on your skintone as well. There is a dancer that reminds me of you called Vasha Hatal (or Vashta Halal?) and I saw her wearing a dark green with gold costume at Rakasah.

I put white almost last because you already have a white costume.

I put silver & gold near the top because they will be versatile - can easily change the costume color by buying a different skirt set.

Was surprised you didn't list turquoise or fuschia - I think they look lovely on olive-skinned dancers.

I personally hate turquoise on me. I find that because I'm not very dark olive, it just makes me look sallow. Even with a tan, it seems to do that. Fuchsia is pretty, yeah, but while I think it is nice with my skin tone, I'm not extremely fond of it. I'd buy a $20 shirt in fuchsia, but not a $200-300 costume.

Wow, she actually does look a bit like me, though a bit finer in build.

You know, the more I look at those pictures, the more I'm thinking, "Why hello there, semi-doppelganger! I CAN HAZ COSTUMEZ PLZ?" Heh. Damn lolcats have infected my brain.

I do believe I answered in reverse order--8 being most preferable, 1 being the least. Oops.

Ah! Ok. I was a little surprised, given what I know about your taste in colours. :)

Well, not just that...I'm thinking how they'd look on you. I love dark green--given the right shade, it's the most flattering color for me--but I don't think of it as being a very "you" color, but reds definitely are. Likewise, blue is a funny one--I think a deep or dark blue could look great, but navy seems not quite right. Like Nep said, too dark and it loses something on stage.

I do actually love wearing dark green, though I have a hard time finding clothes in the right shade. Navy blue is really the only blue I like on me. I wear it pretty often. Royal blue and cobalt blue just make me look yellow.
