My coffee pot bit the dust this morning!

[livejournal.com profile] pierceheart got up early, put grounds and a filter in the coffee maker, filled the reservoir with water, and turned it on. When I went out to the kitchen, it wasn't brewing. The water wasn't even hot. Crap. I've had that thing since Spring 2002, and I have no idea how long my grandma had it before that. Still, I didn't expect it to crap out on me when it's been working just fine all along. I wish it could have waited until I moved in with [livejournal.com profile] pierceheart, when we only would have NEEDED one coffee maker. Meh.

Drinking the work coffee now. It doesn't suck, but it's not as good as mine.

I'm so sorry. Work coffee can really stink (especially when my archeologist co-worker makes it - good lords...).

I just went into the local hippy coffee joint and ordered a double shotted mocha.

The girl at the bagel counter asked why I wasn't eating ... so i explained I'd eaten, but the coffee maker died.

And, of course, I wanted to bring my fascist self in to see the dirty nasty hippy easy chicks who work there.

In our house we use a french press. This past weekend Andrew bought me a new Krups coffee grinder (http://www.greenbeanery.ca/bean/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=23_486&products_id=6899). I love it.

I don't tend to be a huge fan of the French press, because I tend to be busy doing stuff while coffee brews, and I rarely would be able to time it just right so that it tastes good. For the people who like their coffee as strong as it can possibly be, that's fine. But I tend to prefer mine balanced and smooth, not tarry and bitter. If I thought I could time the brewing better, I'd be all set. My boy has a PERFECT coffee maker: it grinds the beans fresh for each pot, and brews into an insulated carafe instead of a glass one that sits on a hot plate. Alas, I do not yet have that every day.

Sounds like you have had bad french press coffee :-) Tarry bitter coffee is the result of using the wrong grind and/or coffee. We like our coffee a little strong, but not espresso strength. My morning routine is plug in the kettle and push the button on the krups to start the grind. Go check my email and start reading LJ. Return to kitchen, pour grinds in press and fill with water. Put toast in toaster and rinse carafe, push down plunger on press and pour into carafe. Fill press halfway with more water, butter toast, plunge coffee and fill carafe. Then coffee and toast for Andrew and I at our computers. Really though, whether using a press or a coffee maker, nothing beats fresh ground coffee, unless like a friend of mine, it is also freshly roasted :-)

Hmm, never mind on the french press. Yes: New machine, pronto!

I think we still have the french press, no?

you can likely find a coffee maker on sale, or cheap, at a drugstore. i saw an ad for walgreens this morning (i hate walgreens, around here they seem to prize stupidity in their staff) that had coffee makers for less than $10, i think.

hang onto your carafe if you can, since those break first. i'm amazed alanya and i haven't broken ours. we're both rather uncoordinated before coffee.

You're the third person to say that. I am not a fan of the French press.
