I know, but it is often used in a sort of condescending, PC sort of way. People use it a lot in writing to describe someone who's overweight without using the word "fat", because since they're big, clearly their size has to be brought to the reader's attention more than it would be with an average-sized or smaller person (why? I ask you), but "fat" makes the writer sound mean.
I guess I can see how the manner in which it has been co-opted by general society is rather annoying. In the original (Jewish) context, though, I don't think that condescending aspect existed at all. I guess, like with any word, what really matters is the sincerity behind it.
