I'd been stagnating in my entertainment interests for a long time. I was thrilled to discover Doctor Who for something new, and now I'm also excited about The Golden Compass (the book, not the movie). I picked it up last night for something to read while eating dinner, and became utterly engrossed very quickly. I'm very much enjoying it. According to [livejournal.com profile] pierceheart, the last book in the series is incredibly dense--something like the Silmarilion. I'll cross that bridge when I come to it, though. At the moment, it's great. I like the so-close-to-the-real-world-but-not-quite thing they've got going on there.

Oh, and unrelated: my choli top for the recital is being shipped! Yay! *bouncebouncebounce*

I love that whole series - and I want my own daemon like no one's business.

I don't watch the new Who unfortunately, but I'm thinking I need to give it a shot. I do love me some Tennant, and I am a fan of the old series. Have you seen the clip with David Tennant and Graham Norton? Norton took out a personal ad for Doctor Who, and it's brilliant :).

Ha! No, I haven't seen that.

Tennant is ok. He's funny. If you're going to watch new Who, start with Eccleston, even if you love Tennant. There's enough backstory in the 2005 season to make it worthwhile (and I like it better!).

I always thought Eccleston looked like a likable doctor, so I will probably take your advice. I wish I had time to develop an addiction to Torchwood.

IMHO The Golden Compass was the best book of the three. They get preachier as they go on and, to me less engaging. That isn't to say that books 2 and 3 are bad just that they aren't as good as book 1.

Ah, preachiness from an atheist is just as annoying as preachiness from a religious person.

It is very clear that Mr. Pullman has an axe to grind against organized religion. At the same time he does support spirituality. I did like the books even so.

Silmarillion-dense -- exactly.

i need to reread them all, because i don't remember then so well. i know i liked them, and appreciated the density, even w/ the preachy. but i have no idea where my copies are, and i'm not good w/ library books - unless i can know where they are at all times, like my textbook. i forget about library books otherwise, and bury them in the house.

Huh, I've actually never thought of the last book being dense at all, but maybe I'm weird or just didn't notice. I don't really think they're all that preachy, either, personally. It's much more, "Ok! Stuff sucks, what are we going to do about it." "Well, wait, why does stuff suck?" "Ok, here's a little history, but only a little, and then we go back to fixing this thing."

I mean yeah, ok, Pullman is clearly not fond of religion, but it never interfered with the story for me.

I loved the first book, and I enjoyed the second book almost as much. The third book was a slog. It took me weeks to finish (whereas I had read the first two in a few days), and I sometimes wanted to throw it against the wall.

But the first two... yeah! :)

They get more intense and awesome as they go. It's just wow.

I like the so-close-to-the-real-world-but-not-quite thing they've got going on there.

Wait until you get to the middle of the second one and the last one. You'll be all like, "I'd totally believe this. -check spine- Damn, fiction." And the way Lyra reads the alethiometer is just like reading Tarot for me. It's way cool.
