Weekend and other stuff!
Apr. 14th, 2008 11:54 amI had a lovely weekend with
dahveed76. Other than getting to spend time with my sweetie, highlights of the weekend included:
1. Finding two awesome fabrics for altarcloths. One is a pretty pale yellow with pink flowers, nice for spring and summer. The other is sort of the Ultimate Lammas Altarcloth (tm): it's black with ears of corn. Yeah. Awesome.
2. Visiting the Harvard Museum of Natural History. The glass flowers weren't as pretty as I'd hoped, but the glass sea creatures were funky. The minerals were amazing. The animals were sometimes cute, sometimes impressive, and sometimes creepy. The dinosaur bones were nifty.
3. Sunset Grill & Tap. Oh, Beer Mecca, how I love thee! Funny story: these two frat-boy looking guys had bought yards of beer. We saw them while waiting for a table. One of them was having real trouble drinking from the yard, and complained, "This is the gayest thing I ever bought!" I SO wanted to say, "If you wanted something that's not 'gay', as you say, why did you buy a big long cylindrical object to hold up to your mouth? Did you think this through properly, hon? Size queen!"
In costuming news:
1. My L. Rose Designs half-top came in, and it...is...GORGEOUS! Perfect fit. Nothing like my old choli. I want fifty million of them. I put the whole costume together (top, harem pants, skirt, coin belt, coin earrings, and coin necklace), and it looks totally awesome.
2. Shadia CAN use my normal bra for a costume bra! Lane Bryant is having a huge sale on their website, so instead of paying $84 for 2 bras (I need a new white one for everyday, mine's fraying) or even $63 when they do their usual buy one, get one 1/2 price thing, I paid $45 for both, plus shipping. ROCK ON.
3. Shadia has a variegated fabric that changes from red to fuchsia that she suggested for me. I don't know if it's what I want, necessarily, but I told her I'd take a look. Could be pretty. *bounce bounce bounce* YAY COSTUMING! I am very excited about this.
In other news:
1. I flipped out the other day when I got a claims summary from BCBSMA (the "this is not a bill" thing) that said only about half of my X-ray costs and most but not all of my emergency room visit would be covered by my insurance. However, I reviewed my plan literature, and it looks like really, it WILL be covered. No charge for X-rays when ordered in advance by a MIT Medical person, and just the co-pay for e-room visits if referred by MIT Medical. Good! That means I have money for a costume still!
2. My sister is almost certainly moving to the Philly area. She's been living with her ex, who's now her best friend, for ages. He's moving down there for a new job. I'm a little surprised, but she doesn't really have any other good friends, and I think that maybe getting far away from the parental abode (she's currently in the next town over and went to school in state, in the SMALLEST state) might be good for her. She might also find a better job, since the one she's in now is pleasant enough but pretty dead-end. I wish her luck.

Date: 2008-04-15 04:55 am (UTC)I'm glad I'm not the only one who still gets riled by people using "gay" as an adjective for things they consider "stupid." I recently went into a student living room and noticed that their chore list was addressed to, ahem, "faggots." I have to treat such situations as a hate crime, so when I talked to the students, I said that I would start by giving them the benefit of the doubt and assume that they had "reclaimed" the term as members of the community ;).
I don't think that list could come down fast enough. Talk about an educational moment!
