I can't hear the word "neighborhood" without thinking about Mister Rogers.

Anyway, question:

This place is having an open house this weekend. It looks pretty cute, it's in our price range and it's quite convenient for commuting (right down the street from the Green Street T stop) . I don't know JP that well, though, so I have no idea if it's in a decent neighborhood or not. Can anyone fill me in? The address is 54 Glen Road in JP.

It is a very pretty area, diverse in income and race and is known for being gay friendly. Centre Street has some great food.

I am a little whimpy. I get nervous walking back to my car at the Green Street parking lot if it is too late at night. Nothing has ever happened, it is just the parking lot is below street grade nothing else.

This shooting Monday afternoon was about 1/2 mile away but they say it is unusual to see violence in this neighborhood

But it looks like the police are responding with foot patrols

And there is Boston Police crime awareness website for Jamaica Plain

A lot of the area is formerly industrial, so if you plan to garden test the soil.

Egleston Square used to be know for it's violence, but not so much any more. It is about a half mile away as well.

My dad grew up there...
His dad used to take him Doyle's.
If you go the open house, walk over there.
You'll get a general feel of that side of the neighborhood.

If he has not been... the boy would LOVE it there!

Dunno who this is, but I like Doyle's, when the service doesn't suck. I've been there a couple times, and the boy's been once.

We live a couple of blocks from there, and thought about buying a place on Glen Rd when we were looking. We have lived in the neighborhood for 5 years now, and we really like it.

Feel free to ask me/us any questions about the area. I can tell you that the shooting we had on Monday is an anomaly, and you should see the youth and neighborhood response. It's really heartening. :)

Thanks! Is there a decent grocery store in the area other than Harvest Co-Op? I love them, but they do get a bit pricey.

Two T-stops away (Jackson Sq) there is a Stop & Shop. Also, over in Hyde Sq. there's the Hi-Lo, which people seem to like but never seems convenient to get to (despite the fact that it's probably closer to us than Harvest...ah well).

Plus there is City Feed (http://www.cityfeedandsupply.com/home.php) which is close to us by Stony Brook, which is convenient for little trips, if not exactly cheaper than Harvest. They are opening a bigger location on Centre St soon.

And there is a small farmer's market on Tues and Sat in the summer. You can buy a farm share and just pick up your box o'goodies, or shop like you normally would.

Hmm. That might not suck. Being that close to a subway stop makes non-walkable grocery stores better. It's easier to transport a bunch of bags on the subway than the bus, in my experience.

We do walk to the Stop & Shop depending on the amount we're carrying back (or walk there and T back), but we are on the next stop down, so it's only one T stop away for us.

Yeah, [livejournal.com profile] canongrrl mentioned that. It's definitely gorgeous, but it's way out of our price range, unfortunately. We're looking for $300K and under. Meh. I'd like a place like that one!
