Date: 2008-05-05 06:56 pm (UTC)That is fantastic. We really need some summer interns to come in and clean up a bunch of these silly laws.

Date: 2008-05-05 06:59 pm (UTC)It takes way too much to get rid of the law, or properly change it.
I'll talk to someone I know who knows who to talk to on Beacon Hill.

Date: 2008-05-05 07:17 pm (UTC)It was prohibited by the statute 56 Geo. III. c 58,which declared that after the 5th of July 1817, no brewer, or dealer, or retailer of beer, shall receive, or use, or have in his possession or custody, any liquor, extract, or other material or preparation, for the purpose of darkening the colour of worts or beer, other than brown malt. He was also prohibited from using molasses, honey, liquorice, vitriol, quassia, Cocculus indicus, grains of paradise, guinea pepper, or opium, or any extract or preparation of the same, or any substitute for malt or hops, under a penalty of 200 pounds.
Now, while we find issues therein regarding the cheapening of beer via darkening agents, we also see prohibition on various other substances, among them, grains of paradise.
So, I would suggest that the common law supports a view prohibiting the use of GoP in beer production, but, IANAL.
Are you not a fan of the Summer or White ales?
I just find it funny that a brewery that has made some lavish claims about its beer meeting the standards of Reinheitsgebot could fail to meet standards in its home of record.
