Discworld casting
Jun. 5th, 2008 01:50 pmI've been browsing through a thread on this subject on my Discworld-related Ravelry group, and have seen some fantastic ideas for casting Discworld characters. Some people have had ideas I've had before, too, which is neat.
1. Vetinari: Alan Rickman. No f'ing question. If they need a younger person, though, Rufus Sewell. Both do that icy, inscrutable thing well, and both can be believable as highly intelligent (I'm sure Rickman really is, don't know much about Sewell). Actually, since Vetinari and Vimes should be about the same age...Sewell would have to be it. I think he could pull it off, even though he doesn't have THE PERFECT voice like Rickman does.
2. Sam Vimes: Christopher Eccleston. Someone ELSE thought this one up, not me (believe it or not), and of course I said OMG YES. Perfect. Middle-age, not conventionally handsome, but still damned attractive. He does the brooding thing and the manic thing well (duh), and Vimes can be both. Also good in action.
3. Captain Carrot: Brendan Fraser. Carrot's always been a tough one for me, since there aren't many actors out there who can do the wide-eyed innocent thing, and who are also quite masculine-looking and have a decent bit of muscle on them. Fraser was actually a damned good idea, IMO. I also tend to hear Carrot having an American accent in my mind, not a British one. Same with Angua.
4. Carcer (from Nightwatch): Robert Carlyle. He does mad bastard wonderfully well.
5. The Fairy Queen (from Lords and Ladies and also The Wee Free Men): Helena Bonham Carter. Lovely AND hit by the crazy stick.
6. Wolfgang von Uberwald (Angua's brother): Karl Urban. He does arrogant well, and is in good shape. And he looks good with the Aryan Ubermensch look that I imagine Wolfgang to have.
7. Nanny Ogg: Dame Judi Dench, with a little more weight on her. She was great in Chocolat as a hedonistic old mischievous woman.
8. Granny Weatherwax: Dame Maggie Smith. Very imposing, and we already know she can be an excellent witch. :)
9. Sgt. Colon: Robbie Coltrane, definitely. Perfect look, and he's good at doing dim-but-well-meaning.
10. Rincewind the Wizzard: MacKenzie Crook (the pirate with the wooden eye from PotC). Exactly the sort of scrawny and scruffy look Rincewind needs to have, and I can really imagine him doing the character just right.
11. Foul Ol' Ron: Brad Pitt. I mean, come on! After his work in Snatch...
12. Voice of Detritus (who'd probably have to be CGI): Vin Diesel. Hells yes. He was awesome doing the Iron Giant's voice.
13. Leonard da Quirm: Christopher Lloyd. Who's better as an aimiable mad genius?
14. Jason Ogg: Nathan Fillion. Hot, big, and would make a good yokel-type. Plus, I want to see him working at a forge. It gets hot in there...
15. Angua von Uberwald: Angelina Jolie with bleached hair. Someone suggested her, and I was skeptical at first, but it's growing on me. She's good at coming across as competent and tough, but still feminine, and not necessarily bitchy.
16. Buddy Holly/Imp y Celyn: Orlando Bloom. He's always accused of "looking elvish," after all.
17. Nobby Nobbs: Ewan Bremner? He's funny looking enough, and has played a good petty criminal.
I just spent MUCH TOO LONG doing this. Oy.
Any other thoughts?
