Last night, [livejournal.com profile] nepenthe01 and I were all set to take our clothes off, and no one showed up!

Oops. Burlesque starts NEXT week. D'oh! Instead, we went for some summer rolls and stuff at Noodle Street before belly dance class. I'm glad I did. I was still hungry as anything after class, even though I'd had a salad and some baked chips for dinner. We worked hard. First of all, almost 10 minutes of drills can be very exhausting. Then, she had us dancing to Turkish and Greek and Arabic versions of the same songs. Let me tell you: those Greeks are fucking CRAZY with their damned bouzoukis. Sheesh. You have to move a mile a minute to keep up with that music, and you kind of have to keep up a constant shimmy, which ain't easy. Then, at the end of class, we did a rather long full routine (which fortunately did not include any Greek music except "Miserlou", but did seem to have some long periods of shimmying required). Monday nights when dance starts at 5:45 and goes until 9 are going to be LONG nights, and tiring ones. But fun. Yeah.

Man. I love dance more and more. I can hardly hear music anymore without wanting to dance to it. I love belly dance music. I need MORE dance music. I can't believe I don't own a single version of "Istmem Babacim" in any form. I also need to check out the old Lebanese records my father got from my sister's ex's parents. They might well rock.

Tonight, I have a date with [livejournal.com profile] dahveed76. It's funny, I had a dream about him this morning while my alarm was snoozing. I dreamed we woke up together at my place, and then my alarm went off, and I really woke up. I was so tired. Hell, I didn't get to bed until close to midnight last night. Now I'm guzzling coffee and working. Well, getting BACK to work now, after procrastinating in LJ-land. :)

You know, I kept meaning to make you a mix of belly dance music.
What kind do you like, in general? What beats? Which countries?
Maybe I can have it for you for one of the upcoming burlesque classes...

Aw, that would be awesome! In general, I don't tend to do much with the Greek stuff or with Arabic pop, but I like Egyptian, Lebanese and generally Arabic, Turkish, and Armenian stuff. I adore the old-school classics, but in general, I prefer to stay away from the versions that have the long keyboard passages (SO 70s, so annoying). I do like "Chickie" by Oojami, and I like some Latin-ish stuff, and I like Georges Lammam, for the more eclectic/modern side. I like a good karsilama. I like all kinds of songs, anything I could throw into a routine. I prefer Arabic drum solos to Turkish or Armenian ones in general because they're easier, but I should try to branch out. Some of my favourite songs are "Shisheler", "Soode Soode", "Istmem Babacim", "Ipeksi", "Miserlou", "Ahlam", "Ya Mustafa", and "Hoplanda". Only one of those I don't currently have is "Istmem Babacim". I'd give some more pop stuff a try, but I'm not a big Natacha Atlas fan, for example, and prefer the pop stuff to be more...hmm...clubby? Something with a strong heavy beat that makes you really want to shake your booty.
