So I'm taking this 5-week class on burlesque. We've been encouraged to explore the idea of a burlesque name as part of building a character. I'm a bit stumped, I have to admit. I'm great at thinking of names, just not great at thinking of names for me. [livejournal.com profile] tisana brought up the idea of those stripper name memes (take your first pet's name and the name of the street where you grew up, sort of thing). She suggested that MY pet's name would make a great burlesque name for me, slightly modified: Lucy Furr. Cute, definitely. There's a performer out there with that name already, alas! Not that I'll be performing burlesque, but I kind of want to be original. I thought of the name Venus Envy, but that sounds like it has to be used by one of those redhead-with-green-eyes chicks, and I totally couldn't pull it off. Anyway, I'm looking for input. Not names, necessarily, and not even by preference. Just words. Words to describe my aesthetic and personality. The only restriction is they have to work in a sexy context. They don't have to be sex-related words, but if you think I'm stupid, well, I'm not going to include anything to do with "stupid" in my name. If you are someone who thinks I have attractive qualities, listing some of the things you think are attractive about me wouldn't suck. Things that make me unique are good, too.

My name MUST have a pun of some sort. I have decided this. It's ME, after all. It wouldn't be RIGHT if it didn't have a pun. I will be able to handle that, I think.

I guess what I want to know is, what do people think of, when they think of me? What sorts of things could I pull off in a burlesque character? Inquiring minds want to know! And if anyone who was in the class tonight likewise wants some brainstorming suggestions from me, let me know!

You should include the word spathic (http://www.thefreedictionary.com/spathic) somewhere in there, clearly. ;) And since it usually refers to minerals, use a gem you like. Spathic Ruby. OK, doesn't exactly roll off the tongue.

I dunno. I would go with Dom's suggested formula of noun/name + adjective, but I couldn't tell you what adjectives I'd use for you. The things that jump up are your physical attributes, like the darkness of your hair and eyes...could have lots of fun with that.

Mica has very strong planar cleavage. Then again, you might not want to try targeting the obscure rock-geek audience with your burlesque name.

Why yes, it does! And...this is funny on many levels. Which I will not go into here. :)

Something starting with "Anuga", I think . . .

Saltwater eel? No, wait, that's Anago. :)

Oh wait, was that "Angua"? Cool, but sounds a little dominatrix-y for me, I think.

No domme-sounding stuff? So saying that I associate you with corsets, and suggesting some pun on laces/laced/lacey wouldn't work, huh?

Date: 2008-06-24 01:41 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] badseed1980.livejournal.com
Well, corsets don't have to equal domme. It all depends on the accessories and attitude! I just don't feel like I can pull off the "Rawr! I am powerful! Worship me, little boy!" thing at ALL. I almost wish I did the waist training thing, because Lucy Tightlace would be a rather cute name. (Lucy/loose)

OooOohhh. That's a good one.
I think you should do it regardless, if you like it. It fits you; hell, you have that shirt saying, "Mine's tighter," right?

So what if you didn't do waist training? You wear corsets.

This is true. I wonder how much burlesque-type stuff you can do in a corset? They aren't exactly good for the stripping bits...

Dunno about that...Dita von Teese did it when she danced at ManRay. I'm sure it wasn't properly done up really tightly, but she did work the loosening the laces into the act, and unhooked it in front, and then continuing with bigger moves. You can't belly dance in one, no, but you can do a lot of leg and arm moves with one on.

Of course, the corset type probably makes a difference. She had an underbust one, not too long, paired with a bra.

Hmm. I don't own an underbust. I suppose that I could wear one, if I wore it with a bra.

plenty, if you get an under-bust corset and put the corset on underneath everything else. Some of the Boston Baby Dolls have routines with corsets; I think they usually don't take them off in mid-routine.

Ah, good to know. I've never thought about buying an underbust, since I most often see them worn by people with perky little tits, and have always thought they'd look weird on someone with my body shape. I feel too saggy.

Firstly, I'm not sure what standard of perkiness you're comparing yourself to. While I have no idea what you look like without support, there does seem to be quite an audience for ample natural breasts, which audience seems to appreciate the fact that larger breasts typically show more signs of, say, being part of a real live person.
Also -- with a bra on, you have a lot of control over your shape, and if you strip that off and spin your tassels, I think most people aren't going to be paying attention to whether or not your breasts are inhumanly perky for their size. :-)
Finally, I've seen some underbust corsets that do provide some amount of aesthetic shaping/fluffing for women with larger breasts, though I don't know how hard it might be to come by one that works that way for your body.

Yeah, I'm pleased to say that I can already do the tassel spinning. :) Nothing fancy, but I managed to get them going at ManRay before.

Mmmm... happy place...

"Lucy Tightlace" is cute, and I wouldn't think you'd have to *always* wear corsetry to pull the name off.

Polly Vinyl?
For the extra-creepy dom image, Mistress Vandemar?

D came up with Misty Bush and Mona Lott (those sound too stipperish to me but I'll leave it to you)

I thought of Cyn (as in short for Cynthia) Full, Penny Layne, and Willow Fate.

I'm more interested in something that actually sounds like a person who knows me could associate it with ME for one reason or another...the cute sounding stuff I can come up with, but I need ideas about what type of concepts/aesthetics to include.

Gotcha. Corsets, gourmet cooking, and cleavage come to mind off hand. I do like Cyn Full though same vein as Lucy Furr.

You're a brunette; there could be mileage in chocolate references? Temptation, wickedness and so forth...

And considering I'm an utter chocoholic, that might work. Thanks!
