Things I have seen near my office:

1. There's this area where Canada geese, white geese, ducks, and pigeons congregate and snooze, near the river. I've passed it many times, but today, I actually went down there and got within maybe 10 feet of the birds. I probably could have gotten closer--they were very relaxed--but I didn't want to risk spooking any of them, since they looked so peaceful. There are a lot of feathers down there. I will have to keep that in mind if I need any.

2. Walking back from there, I saw a PEACH TREE growing in a little woody area to the side of the road. Wow! What a find! This is the second wild peach tree I've found so far in my life. I'll have to go back there in a couple weeks or so, when stuff is ripe.

3. Walking further, I eventually encountered...blackberries! Maybe just another few days to a week, and those will be nice and ripe.

4. On walks to Trader Joes, I have found a black mulberry tree. I have eaten mulberries from it. :) This reminds me of when I was a little kid. My father would take us on walks near the old Slater Mill, and there was a mulberry tree there. It was a little ways over a fence, and my father would pick us up to reach the berries since we couldn't lean over that far on our own.

5. Not far from the mulberry tree, there is a Concord grape vine growing on a fence around a playground. Neato, and nom nom nom!

6. There is a plant growing down by the river that might be some sort of yarrow. It has yellow flower clusters and ferny-looking leaves with a sweet, spicy smell. There are also a few wild roses, some pretty purple cone-like flowers I don't really know (probably purple loosestrife, though), and also a vine with beautiful trumpet-shaped flowers that are white, verging to pale pink on the edges. I think that's a kind of morning glory.

Yeah, for all my new location's pretty inconvenient for some things, it has its perks. :)

1. My family has a long-standing feud with Canadian geese -- don't know why this is so, but it is. If they even glimpse my father or me, they immediately go on the attack.

4. There was a mulberry tree in my neighborhood when I was a kid in Kentucky. I loved those things!

I have to admit, I was a little afraid of pissing off the geese. An enraged goose on the loose is no joke, although I'd be the butt of ALL the jokes if anyone saw me running away from an angry goose. :)

Of course, I looked at those peacefully napping geese, and thought, "Mmm...roast those suckers up with some sage stuffing..."

There's a mulberry tree about a block and a half from my house. People look at us weirdly when we eat the berries. It's okay...more for us! :)
