I just got some pretty sucky news (no, I'm not going to elaborate, but rest assured that my job and my health, and the major issues of my loved ones, are fine), but I'm in a surprisingly good mood. Sometimes, optimism appears out of nowhere. This is nice. I hope it's justified.

I think that knowing about the shit some of my friends are going through right now makes my own problems seem small by comparison, too. I am full of hope and good wishes for them, and maybe that's part of what's making me feel hopeful and good in myself.

I agree. I have to admit though, that I am perverse, and I hope there's a pill for it. Because when I am being happy, say sitting on the couch holding hands with my honey, instead of being totally happy I find myself thinking of the two people I know right now who CAN'T do that: the prof I used to work for whose wife of 30+ years died this weekend; and Jet whose Tia is in ICU with 6 strokes and may never be able to go home. They are bereft, and their loss sneaks into my present joy.

The other bad thing about it is that lately when I hear someone complain, I have to bite my tongue from snarking: "Lissen, if you're not dead, or recently bereaved, or in the ICU with 6 strokes, I have no sympathy, go soak your head." But it has made me go soak my head and shut up, so I at least there is symmetry.
