Ok, I'm not doing EVERYTHING in pirate-speak today. Although trying to write a prospect evaluation in pirate-speak? That might be amusing. :P

So: stuff.

1. Got a coupon in my inbox from Borders for 40% off any DVD box set! OMG! This means either Torchwood season 2 or the Indiana Jones box set with the three original movies in it. Decisions, decisions. Well, Torchwood is more expensive. I might get that. I'll have to do it on Saturday evening, since it's only for today and tomorrow and I won't have time until then.

2. Nice to know I can get King Richard's Faire tickets for $4 off through MIT. Up to 20 of them! W00t!

3. I got assigned to my student for the reading mentor program thing. He's a second-grader, N. Squee! Bet he'll be adorable. I should write my mom and see if she has any recommendations for kids that age, or at least for websites where I'd be likely to find some good ones.

4. Can I tell you how much I love Roger Daltrey singing with the Chieftans? So much. *happy sigh*

5. We had pizza on Tuesday night for dinner. We had the leftovers last night. Today, they're giving us pizza at a lunchtime meeting. I'm making pizza for a potluck tomorrow. WTF? Fortunately, my homemade one will be quite different from the store-bought kind, and probably better for me.

6. I finished the knitting on the stole I'm making for [livejournal.com profile] pierceheart's mom. Now, I have about three ends to weave in, and I have to block it. Almost done! Yay!

I decided on TW because I haven't actually seen all of season 2 of that yet. Also, because it provides more eye candy (for my eyes, anyway) than DW. :D

Gotta get that Indy set someday, though...

yeah, i chose this one specifically because i HAVE seen all of it -- i don't need distractions just now. i need rewards for good behaviour.

a friend just offered to burn more of S4 for me, and i'll take him up on it, but then HIDE the dvds. :) 'cause otherwise i'll watch them (over and over), and i don't really have time.

Do you think I might be able to borrow some of the ones you've already watched? Like, maybe when you come to the party? I'd love to get a start on it.

can you watch AVI files? 'cause i've got all of it in that format. i can't watch them at home. mac won't do it.

if so, i'll package them up and send them to you by campus mail. if we expect me to remember to bring something to your party, we are both foolish. i have school that day - i'll be lucky to remember to bring MYSELF to your party. :)

I'll have to see if the boy's DVD player can handle that. It would be hard for both of us to watch them on my computer. How's the image quality?

well, for the AVI files, no clue. for the dvds i've got, it's fine. at least, i have no complaints. glad to have them. :)

OK, I'll talk to the boy about it and find out if that might be a good solution for us. Thanks!

My dad used to coach 2nd graders who needed a little help with their reading. He took one of the dogs, the shy one -- which gave the kid something to read *to* other than my dad.

Maybe a toy the kid could read to?

Actually, I'm going to be reading to the kid, not the other way around. It's basically designed to be a way to get the kids more interested in books and reading without making them feel like they have to stress over reading it right themselves. It helps increase their vocabulary, too. It's sort of a fun break that they get during lunchtime that also helps them get more enthusiastic about learning.

My brother the elementary school teacher recommends "More Books Kids Will Sit Still For: A read aloud guide." "The Read-Aloud Handbook" to his "parents". If MIT doesn't have them, you can go to the BPL or ask your town to order them from the MinuteMan library network.

I found these links for ideas...

Found some more!

Cole, J. (1996). The Magic School Bus: Ants in its Pants.
Scholastic, Inc.: Broadway, NY

This fictional tale, based on an episode of the same TV series, follows Mrs. Frizzle’s class as they become so tiny they’re no bigger than ants – all in the name of capturing film for their science project! Their adventure into a real ant bed teaches children about an ant’s habitat, lifestyle, and colony roles such as foraging, guarding, food-carrying, building, and queenship. This is a great read-aloud for story time or for use near an ant farm learning center.

Hart, L. (2006). Did Dinosaurs Eat Pizza?
Henry Holt & Company, LLC: New York, NY.
This fun, easy to read book introduces kids to the fact that while science can explain many things, there are still much more that we may never know, especially in the case of dinosaurs, who lived millions of years before humans. For instance, even though we have dinosaur bones, we cannot scientifically tell what color they are. Neither can we know how exactly they sounded. Humorous, colorful depictions of dinosaurs and funny theories will make this a must-read-aloud story time favorite.

Romanova, N. (1985). Once There was a Tree.
Puffin Books: New York, NY.
This short, easy to read story lets children follow what happens after a tree is cut down and just the stump is left. Over time, beetles, maggots, ants, bears, birds, frogs and even an earwig made good use of the old stump. In the end, the question of “Whose stump is it?” is proposed, summing up that it belongs to all, and because of this, it is our job to protect our earth. This book would be a great read-aloud during lessons on habitats, forest animals, or the environment.
