I really need to go check out Mayflower Poultry sometime. I'd love to get one of their fresh-killed chickens and make chicken soup out of it. Nom nom nom. I also want a tee-shirt from there. :) Something about this place, I just find very...satisfying. Like, "Oh yeah, this is how you're supposed to buy chicken." And they also have other stuff like game hens, buffalo, lamb, eggs, etc. Nice!

I got the t-shirt, myself. :)

It's an interesting place, and there is a fabulously bizarre video store right next door. Make a day of it.

Thinking of the practicality of an urban-located "Live Buffalo, Fresh Killed" butcherie.

I believe you'll find Camberville has some pretty strict abattoir laws on the books.

I'm wondering though, it being East Cambridge, and heavily Brazilian - if they would let someone buy a live chicken there.

I have bought duck breast from them. It was good stuff. Think of them as a poultry butcher shop. As in the northend, the cow is not in the back alley wait to be your steak. I have seen no chicken coops.

If you are feeling adventurous you can get the thong :)

See, I think that the Clam Box in Quincy should sell thongs!

Yeah, I would love to get some duck breast again. Mmm. Duck.

Oh, dear God...I don't know whether to laugh or cringe, or maybe both simultaneously...

BTW, It's not looking good for me to make the party tomorrow--it seems Coronation is running a LOT later than I expected it to, and I'll be lucky if I get home before 11ish. :-( (Plus, I can't remember your address--e-mail to me at robin at mindspring dot com, please?)

Any idea how/where the chickens get slaughtered? Because the usual large-scale factory conveyor belt method is pretty horrific for them, and I'd prefer not to torture my meat if I can avoid it. And I can, I've got the technology and I'm not afraid to use it! :-)

Any idea if the chicken is free range or from those packed in cages stacked five high?

Be interesting to make a visit and ask. People with nothng to hide are always happy to discuss their methods.

Halal-style slaughter. The chickens' throats are quickly slit by a person. The chicken is not free range, but I think you can order free range chicken from them. It IS raised with vegetarian feed and no antibiotics. They're very open about all that stuff on their site and in interviews.

good news. I like to "vote with my dollar" by supporting suppliers that are in line with my perspective. Luckily, I live in an area where that has become more and more available, they make it easy to come by.

Yeah, and these guys are pretty cheap, too! In 9/07, a reporter said the chicken he or she bought there was $5.51. Not bad.

I found this article looking up halal slaughter. (http://www.geocities.com/mutmainaa/food/halal_slaughter.html) I'm curious why a stunned animal would register more pain on an EEG than one who wasn't? Seems counter intuitive. Any ideas?

And if research proves this, I wonder why we continue to bother to use the stunbolt method. (Of course, this is big beef we're talking, not chickens. They don't bother to stun chickens, who are pretty braindead to begin with, I'm told.)

I'm not sure why that would be. I know little of neuroscience.
