The battery on my iPod is dying. I either need a new iPod or a new battery. I've looked at new iPods. I don't need that much crap. I could get one that's a bit newer than mine but not the latest model on eBay for $160. That's still a buttload of money. I can get a kit from one website with instructions, a new battery, and an opener tool to replace it myself for $37.

Thing is, if I break my iPod in trying to replace the battery, I would need to get a new one anyway.

Have any of you folks done an iPod battery replacement? Is it easy? Even for someone who most decidedly did NOT "come first in jiggery-pokery?" I've never done any work with computer hardware or any kind of electronics. I'm good at following directions, but with something in which I have no experience, they have to be really amazingly clear and precise directions.

Heck, for that price, you could go into Circuit City and pick up the brand new 8GB Nano in a really cool color. And not pay shipping.

'Fraid I can't help you on the battery replacement. I had to replace my iPod a month or so ago, after my first gen Nano got dripped on when Hurricane Hanna came through VA. Meh. I've been loving my new one, though.

Yeah, but I could an 80GB iPod classic for that with no shipping on eBay. :) I need more than 8GB. My 30GB iPod (it's a 3rd generation) seems to be a decent size for me.

Well, damn - I'd say go for it, if you can swing the cost.

I could, but like I said, if the 30GB is big enough for me, and I can replace the battery for about $40, that might be the best solution. Unless it's a big pain in the ass.

I wouldn't consider the battery replacement in one of those to be difficult but somewhat fiddly. You could get someone who is more experienced with the fiddly to do it for you.

Also you could get a professional to install it for you which is still cheaper than a new ipod. these people (http://store.ifixipodsfast.com/ipod-parts-/-installation/ipod-3rd-gen/ipod-3rd-gen-high-capacity-850mah-battery/prod_67.html) seem to do installs at no extra cost (you just have to ship the ipod to them) plus they have a video (http://www.ipodhowtovideo.com/3rdgen/3gbattreplacement.html) of the install process which might give you a better idea if you want to do it yourself or not.

Hmm. Good thinking. I should watch the videos. Thanks.

I haven't done battery replacement but my one experience with Things Fiddly involving Mac was surprisingly easy. One computer ago I had to add memory to my desktop. The step-by-step instructions Mac helped me find were so simple even I did it right the first time.

Let me see if I can find the same folks who printed that page. They may have iPoddery, too.

Yeah, the only thing I'm thinking about is that you're usually supposed to be able to add memory to a computer without having it done professionally by the company. With iPod batteries, they're not designed for the user to replace them. And Apple charges you $23 more for that service than doing it yourself would cost.

I have done it several times. It's most definitely fiddly. It gets harder the more recent the iPod is.

Oh, and that blue tool thinguie? Next to useless.

Definitely watch the videos and decide if you want to do it.

Hmm. What did you use instead of the blue tool? Mine's a third generation iPod classic. Not too recent, I think.
