1. I did not grow up having green bean casserole at the holidays. Ever. I think I first tried it a couple years ago, and haven't had it since. I wasn't impressed with the dish.

2. I DID grow up having tourtiere alongside the turkey at Thanksgiving, or at the very least, a meat dressing similar to what you find in a tourtiere. That dressing was in addition to what was actually in the turkey, a bread stuffing with giblets.

3. I adore cranberry sauce. Love, love, love it. But the jellied stuff bothers me. It's like a cranberry sauce of last resort, IMNSHO. I don't even like the canned whole berry stuff. I make my own. A guilty pleasure: leftover cranberry sauce with blue cheese on whole wheat crackers. NOM.

4. I wonder if now that I've made my own winter vegetable soup several times, my aunt's won't seem quite as amazing by comparison. We'll see. I'm sure hers is richer: she uses cream. I don't really think it's necessary, but it IS good.

I hate, hate, hate green bean casserole. My mother made me eat it every year growing up and I've never gotten over it. Even the smell makes me feel a little ill.

MMMM...that sounds good. Maybe even goat cheese.

Green bean casserole isn't my thing, either. I've eaten it, even made it...and would much rather have just steamed fresh beans instead.

1. Never had it for T-day either. Made it once for a "white trash" themed birthday, and it was meh.

2. My aunt makes Sausage stuffing along with the regular stuffing. Just plain yummy and amazing.

3. Gotta disagree on the jellied cranberry sauce. LOVE it, even when it PLOPS out of the can...yay!

4. Maybe better not to compare, and appreciate them separately. :)

4. Yeah, true. But damn, I've turned out some good ones lately!

I still love jellied cranberry sauce, but you're the one who sold me on the homemade stuff, I recall. Everyone else whose homemade sauce I tried before used too little sugar, or something. It just didn't appeal. I now rather enjoy making my own. Doesn't last long, though. ;)

Yeah, the half-half formula is a pretty good ratio for a good tart-sweet flavor, and easy to remember besides! I'm glad you like it.

similar here. at xmas/easter dinners (mom's side is québecois; thankgiving & xmas-eve are with dad's irish/german(white-bread american :^\ ) side ) usually has tourtiere, a sausage-tato dressing which i think is called 'iroquois holiday hash,' and yellow split pea & ham soup repping the women's side (mom, her 4 sisters and mimére).

a couple uncle's folk are also repped with polish and italian dishes, often made by their wives or daughters, or sometimes by themselves, can depend on the dish.

the result is this wonderful catholic-u.n. buffet of food

Heh. We often had the tourtiere at Christmas too, as well as a phyllo-wrapped cheese appetizer called boerek, representing my mom's Armenian family (on her dad's side). Mmm...boerek. So good.

philo and cheese is a damn fine thing in several incarnations.

btw, as i'm up this early and dinner isn't till late afternoon, i've decide to inject some 'interesting & different' into the 'white-bread' clan's t-day, using mom's side (and her advice to keep it semi-tame*) - tart de sucre, québecois maple-walnut pie.

* as it is a dessert, with familiar ingesdients, it _should_ get at least tried in small slivers...

Mmmm, homemade cranberry sauce. Dan got me started on that years ago. I had never bothered with it b/c the canned stuff is nasty, so I didn't see the point. But yeah, we have always made our own, and continue to do so throughout the winter (great on latkes!). Sadly, this year I will only get to watch him enjoy it, as it's a no no due to my health issues.

And green bean casserole is blecch! My aunt started making it a few years ago, and I just don't get it. Why not just have nice normal green beans if you are going to have green beans (or you know, not bother since it's no longer summer and they are not in season)?
