Grr. Two good friends are blithely jetting off to California in the near future to live. Seamus and Jay are both going bye-bye. I knew about Sea for a long time, but I just found out about Jay today. Bugger. Well anyway, the news makes me glad that certain things turned out the way they did in my life. It's like missing your flight and getting pissed until you see the news that it's crashed. Hehe. Disaster avoision! (Word courtesy of Kent Brockman).
Still, it's kinda depressing. I hate losing friends to distance, and it's really really hard to keep it from happening.

I understand what you mean, and I realize that is why you have an issue with (though you still appreciate) friends in the military.

I don't have a solution for you. But to keep them as friends, and use this wonderful thing called the 'net to stay in touch.

Making new friends doesn't replace old ones, but they are still friends to have. The more friends you make, the more you can make (the idea that caring about people is not subtractive, but multiplicative)

Eh, I do use the net to stay in touch. *I* do. My departing friends don't always. I do love making new friends. I just hate losing old ones. When someone moves away, it often throws into sharp relief how much more you miss them than they miss you.

Remember, people don't always express loss at the same level, or in the same way, as others. I don't want to come off like I am lecturing you though.

And, yes, sometimes people miss you less than you miss them. It sucks.

Well, when I say that it seems I miss them more than they miss me, I mean that they never e-mail me until I e-mail them first. And I start to feel like i'm pestering them if I write more than once a week.

Yeah, California stole one of mine, too.
I understand it's a great place to be for creative types and she's going there to find herself, but I miss having her around. This doesn't stop me from having occasional fantasies about dropping everything and moving there myself.

True I am going far away. Please know that I will not let the communication falter. I'll miss you and others greatly, but I'll surely be back to visit often... and you'll always have a place in LA.

Thanks :) You're actually better at the e-mail thing than most people I know anyway. (possibly because like me you spend too much time online?)
Anyway, just make sure you can make it to King Richard's Faire on the 14th, and I'll try to bring everyone I know.
