I've heard that, given the current economic state, tea makers have been forced to cut back on zing. Relatedly, salad dressing production is going forward with limited zest and frozen foods are being found with a dwindling amount of tang. I find their lack of tang disturbing.
I'm pretty sure this is temporary. If the global recession goes on, zing-producing nations are bound to lower their prices. Of course, that could limit funding for ongoing alternative-pep research...
