Feb. 18th, 2009 09:11 amI got in to work late this morning. The 95 bus (the first leg of my two-part commute) was later than usual, so I missed my next bus (barely!) and had to wait for the one that came 20 minutes later. Oh well. Seeing as I haven't gotten the information I need to take the next step in my work yet, it's not like I could have finished that assignment yet anyway.
Both breakfast and lunch were bento today. OK, breakfast only sort of was. I wrapped a couple slices of light wheat bread in plastic wrap, put two tablespoons of Better Than Peanut Butter in a little mini-jar, and put in a couple Campari tomatoes with it. I toasted the bread and spread it with the BTPB and some low-sugar blackberry jam I had at work, and sliced, cooked, salted, and peppered the tomato. Yum! Lunch is a couple of vegetarian meatballs from TJs with a little sugar-free barbecue sauce, a Laughing Cow light cheese wedge, a half tortilla wrapped around a little light mayo and mustard and greens, rolled into little pinwheels, and leftover veggies from the other night (fennel, zucchini, onion, and red pepper) with some tomato on top. I also have some crackers for the cheese, here at work. Total for all this stuff? 8 Weight Watchers points. I also have a blood orange for a snack (which makes 9). Yeah, baby. I'm good. I always feel very pleased with myself for whipping up interesting, cute, and tasty meals for low points values. It's like that feeling you get when you pull something together from the few staples in your pantry and some half-forgotten stuff in the freezer when you REALLY need to go grocery shopping, and you turn out something tasty and satisfying. Gloat time.
OK, I know, I know, I talk about food ALL THE DAMN TIME, don't I? Well, screw it. I love to cook. I love food. Frankly, it's a wonder I don't have more of a struggle with my weight than I do. Both
pierceheart and I agreed that if we ever struck it rich, we'd both go to culinary school just for the hell of it (and not work in the restaurant industry afterwards because we aren't THAT kind of crazy).
Tonight is skee-ball and probably sushi. Mmm. I haven't had sushi in a while. I'm looking forward to it. Skee-ball, too. It's funny: bowling doesn't do it for me, though it's the same basic principle. Skee-ball, however, is more fun than a barrel of monkeys. I think it's the smaller balls (easier to grip) and the little jump at the end--whee! Plus, you don't get tickets in bowling that can be exchanged for numerous cheesy and yet strangely fascinating items of no real value whatsoever. You KNOW that you've spent far more money on the skee-ball than the items are worth, but at the same time, you don't feel like you've been cheated because you also got the enjoyment of playing skee-ball. Kind of like knitting: you might end up paying more to knit yourself a sweater than you would to buy one, if you use a really nice yarn. But, you've also had the enjoyment of the knitting.

Date: 2009-02-18 02:52 pm (UTC)Bento is a great way to manage portion control and still feel like you're getting a real meal. Even if it's less points than a Lean Cuisine, I feel like I'm getting more and better food most of the time than I would in one of those. Mostly because I can pack in a lot of veggies, which means more food but not much more in the way of calories!

The idea that how your food looks is a big part of your enjoyment of it is central to bento. For example, I have the meatballs in a little heart-shaped cupcake mold. I cut the half-wrap into pinwheels to surround the heart. I arranged the cut tomato over the other veggies in a pinwheel pattern.
The boxes themselves are generally very cutesy in their design--it's that whole Japanese "kawaii" thing. So it's a little goofy, but I love the fact that it all fits together snugly and holds enough food to keep me full.

Date: 2009-02-18 03:05 pm (UTC)I learned to play skeeball on roller skates as a kid. Turns out it made the game much easier later in life when I wasn't on skates! ;) I adore skeeball, and it really saddens me that all the places around here keep disappearing.
