I went to NERAX last night with
pierceheart, again. We met up with
j4yx0r and
my_buried_heart there. They took a bit longer to get inside than we did, since we had advance tickets. When the boy and I got inside, I went to try a beer called Westerham Black Eagle. A description of this beer from the brewery site: "A golden ale using the finest Maris Otter pale ale malt and a small amount of amber malt which imparts a dry, biscuity flavour. Hops are First Gold and Cascade for an added citrus quality and a fruity, slightly spicy note. Bronze Medal SIBA SE 2005."
Indeed. I took a sip, and tasted NOTHING at first, then was hit with a taste like soap. UGH. Great. Dishwater beer. Bleah. I offered the boy a taste, and he agreed with me. I mentioned it to a couple of the volunteers and even gave them tastes, because I was pretty sure something was wrong with the beer. They thought that while it wasn't a great beer, there was nothing wrong with it. I had someone dump the glass for me and got a different beer. Later on, one of the volunteers who'd tried the beer came up to me and apologized, because he'd heard one of the brewmasters say that one of the beers tasted like nasty soap, and he was pretty sure it was the one I complained about. HA. Respect. I has it.
Anyway, other than that, the evening was a TOTAL blast. Not only were
j4yx0r and
my_buried_heart there from LA (and it was awesome to see them), but
giffin showed up too, along with a couple of his friends, one of whom we'd met before. We all hung out and had an excellent time tasting, trading sips, and chatting. We stayed until last call. We'd intended to go home earlier than last night, but...no, that wasn't happening. We were having far too much fun.
My favorite beer that I tried at NERAX this year was Cambridge Brewing Company's Sgt. Pepper. You can see a description here, if you scroll down. Holy crap, is that good. What a gorgeous beer. You really get the complex, floral notes of the pepper in there. YUM. Hmm, looking at that page, I also need to try Big Man and Spring Training. Congrats, CBC. Two years now, you've had my favorite beers at NERAX. You have the beer that I think I have to call my overall favorite ever (the divine Red God). I think you have earned the title of my favorite brewery out there, at this point.

Date: 2009-04-02 05:08 pm (UTC)I am almost certainly going to check out the Novare Res beer bar in Portland that advertised in the brochure at NERAX, because it's a half-mile walk from where I'm staying for my convention. At least one, probably two, of my coworkers are interested in joining me. :)
