I got a text message from [livejournal.com profile] pierceheart this morning saying that he'd come home to sleep last night and found the refrigerator broken. FUCK. I called the landlord but had to leave a message since he wasn't there. Now, having come home, I find the fridge is slightly cool, but everything in the freezer is defrosted and it's not cool enough to keep food in there. It's been like that at least since last night, and it may have been 24 hours or more since it stopped working. FUCK FUCK FUCK. All the food in our fridge and freezer is now inedible, pretty much. GODDAMN IT.

Check your renter's insurance, it likely covers this sort of thing.

*hugs*

It depends on the deductible, but we'll see what we can get.

If the fridge's failure was foreseeable (had you problems with it previously) then you might have cause to go after management for the deductible. Certainly, in this market, your management would be wise to keep you happy to keep you as renters.

The fridge had not given us any problems at all, so this was really unexpected.

That blows serious chunks. And I believe it's not a small matter in tenant law, either. What a royal pain in the ass.

Especially on top of the trouble with the furnace. I'd start checking the other appliances to see how they're doing, at this rate, so as to head off any further trouble at the pass.

It was the thermostat, not the furnace, fortunately. The furnace is fine. Everything has seemed to be working just fine, up until it didn't, so I'm not sure how much good a check would do. Meh.

Yep. Better safe then sorry in that case and toss it or eat it. Most things can't be refrozen.

*knows how you feel* Came home from a vacation once not long ago and found the clocks all flashing, indication of a power outage, with no way to know how *long* they'd been out. Defrosted some chicken or something and it smelled odd. Tossed out the entire contents of freezer and most of fridge stuff except some onions, carrots and celery.

So sorry about this.
