So. Desperately not wanting to have to open my iPod up, diagnose a problem, and fix it myself (I'd probably end up with iPod soup), and not wanting to go against what every person who responded was saying by getting a new one, I tried the last resort fix: percussive maintenance. The screen is working again, for now. It flickered off again at one point but another thump brought it round again. Definitely a connection issue of some kind, I'm guessing. Now that I know that for certain, I will bring it to my parents' neighbor next time I go to RI and ask him to fix that and the battery. Apparently he doesn't have actual fees for his work, so I'll just ask him the cost of the parts and how much time he spent on it, and figure out something that sounds fair.

One of these days I'll get one of them there newfangled ones. But I guess not yet.

Glad it was just a connection issue. Now you can save for a newfangled one gradually? ;)

That might not suck. Maybe I'll set aside $10 a week.

I find it hilarious that you are hesitant to gently tinker with the hardware for fear of breaking it yet you have no compunctions whatever about going caveman on it! =)

I figured a few raps with my knuckles were less likely to cause damage than poking around the innards, much like me slapping someone in the face would be less likely to cause damage than if I performed surgery on them without training. :)
