May. 4th, 2009 08:38 amI'm back! Did you miss me?
My conference went very well. I had a relaxing ride up on the train with a coworker, and then we checked into the hotel and spent some time wandering the city. I got the second and third books in the His Dark Materials trilogy, used, at a bookstore. Then we met up with another coworker for beery goodness at an awesome pub. I had a rauchbier (a German beer made with smoked malt) and some Smuttynose Hamani, which tasted a bit like a good kriek lambic (and I don't mean the Lindeman's kind). We went out for dinner with other folks from the office at a nice little place, then I talked to my guys on the phone and went to bed.
Friday morning, I registered for the conference itself and picked up my thank-you gift for speakers: a jar of Maine wild blueberry jam and a bottle of Maine wild blueberry syrup, from Stonewall Kitchen. Nom! After a rather good breakfast, I went to earn my keep by giving my presentation with my coworker. We got through it without a hitch. Afterwards, a woman who was a researcher for ages and who now gives training seminars for researchers told us that it was the best presentation on our topic that she'd ever seen. Score! After that, I went to another presentation and ate lunch, then left partway through the horrible keynote speech in order to catch my train.
Friday night and Saturday were spent engaging in the kind of stuff you'd expect me to do around the first of May (no, not that, minds out of the gutter). Maypoles were involved. That sort of thing. It was fun. We even had people over to our place after the maypole-ing on Saturday, to have a picnic on the back deck! Then we went and got some heirloom tomato plants (red and yellow Brandywines, and some Cherokee Purples) and planted them in our Topsy Turvy planters. I hope they grow well and fruit well!
Sunday was mostly cleaning, grill repair (by the boy, anyway), grocery shopping, and cooking dinner and bento-stuff. Consequently, I have two gorgeous little fishcakes in my bento box today, as well as some chicken broth and veggie rice, and some broccoli rabe sauteed with zucchini and red pepper.
Oh, there was also much watching of Battlestar Galactica this weekend. Yay BSG!
And now, I ought to get to work. This evaluation won't write itself.
