OK, so, here it is: I'm bringing my Woogie to the vet for the first time. (Please note: any finger-wagging and I'm deleting the comment immediately. She's fixed. She has never exhibited any signs of illness or injury. I know she needs checkups and shots and stuff. Yes. This will now become a regular thing.) Anyway, my question is this. The walk to the vet's is about 1/2 to 2/3 of a mile. I have a soft sided carrier case for her. She likes the carrier ok, for the most part. She does NOT like being in cars. Should I just walk it, or should I call a cab? I'm thinking just walk it. She's about a 14-lb. cat. Anyone have experience with walking with cats in cases? Success, or no?

I know when I walk with a carrier I tend to accidentally bang it on my hip, so I try not to walk too far while carrying it. I'd also take your weather into consideration - how hot is it where you are? How hot would it be in that carrier after the walk?

Hmm, good thinking. The carrier is black, and it's 75 here right now and sunny. The carrier's got screened front and back, but still...might get pretty warm, even in 10-15 minutes.. The cab might be a necessity. Meh. Pity

Sounds about like the soft-sided carrier I've got. The rabbits, unfortunately, tend to nibble on it so I have to take them in a hard plastic one which tends to work out since I can hang a water bottle on it if they're going to be in it too long.

I'm sure you're more graceful than I am when you walk, though. :)

I was thinking the same thing. Whatever you carry gets bounced a bit when you walk. Add some warm weather, close confines and 1/2-2/3 mile of bouncing, and she may not be really happy.

At least the cab ride would be quick. (I had one cat, back when I owned them, that always puked in the car in the last half hour of the four-hour ride to the in-laws.)

Well, she does LIKE close confines. :) And I don't think she'll get TOO bounced. Not more than in the backseat of a cab. Those are always so freakin' bouncy. I'm mostly thinking about heat.

it won't help now but

Yeah, you know, with being this close to the vet, it might not be a sucky thing to have! I found myself wishing I could just put her in the little granny grocery cart I have, but that wouldn't work. :)

Neither of my girls like the car...
My dark girl has escaped every carrier known to man, so she is carried in my arms on a harness and leash.

The light girl is carried in a bag that looks like a handbag. It is tweed and hot pink for goodness sake! I actually had to go shopping with her after an emergency trip to the vet for an eye infection. And she was fine in it the whole time. She would howl in the hard side carrier. So if you can carry her weight without banging her around, it might be better to walk.

Her carrier is something like this:

When I lived on Willow and went to the vet close to that side of Davis Square I used to carry the hard cat carrier down the road. Until I rigged up a shoulder strap it was a really awkward position to hold the carrier but after that it was fine even for Lardbutt^WSpike

i walked w/ tashi in a soft-sided carry case from my place in the Heights to the bus depot on mass ave. and then we'd hang out on the bus until we got to the center where the vet's office is.

i wouldn't have thought of getting a taxi (i was strapped for cash).
