Brief PSA and Stones stuff
Sep. 9th, 2009 03:56 pmPSA: if you are trying to keep your calorie and fat intake down, and you love cheese, Whole Foods has a Dutch cheese called Leerdammer Lightlife that you NEED to try. It's apparently made by the same parent company as Babybel and Laughing Cow cheese, but it's really amazingly good. It has 82 calories and about 5 grams of fat per ounce (2 points on WW), and has a really nice nutty flavor. You even get those little ammonia crystals you get in a well-aged cheese. That was my afternoon snack today. Yum.
OK, Stones. I don't want to go into detail about everything here, but I will say that it was in general a great experience, though I missed some of the really cool people who weren't there this year. We now have 39 stones up, and it was done in a good way. YEAH. However, I hope we never, ever do the 9 hour drive all the way back to Somerville on only 3 1/2 hours of sleep. Ugh. I did get to see a lot of awesome folks, and even participated actively in a brief ritual (which I've never done there before). It involved calling in the spirits of our (blood and spiritual) ancestors who were in the various armed forces at each of the quarters, to stand vigil in the circle on the night before the rising. It was really rather moving. We had Army, Navy, Marine, and Air Force folks, a veteran of emergency services, and me to represent family and partners of service members. I met some great people and had some great times. It's too bad we couldn't get to MDRF, but what can you do?
Tonight I have a date, and I am going to cook cottage pie. I hope it turns out well. I've never done it before. I looked at a bunch of nice-looking recipes, though, and think I can manage. Wish I'd bought eggs so I could add a yolk to the potatoes to make them brown nicely. Ah well.
