Remember how on Saturday, I got me a kick-ass gorgeous dress at Lord & Taylor? Well, I now have a card that is good for 25% off regular OR sale merchandise at L&T, from Oct. 21 through Oct. 25. Question: would it be possible, and should I try, to return the dress and then re-purchase it with that coupon? I mean, FOUR DAYS AFTER I BUY THE THING, this damn coupon comes to me! GRR. I mean, I sincerely doubt I could get away with it, but should I try?

What if, somehow, they happened to have another of the same dress in the same size? Could I return mine and buy that one with the 25% off card?

I've had it happen that I've asked, and they've said Yeh, we'll give it to you at the lower price." Because they KNOW people will do what I'm about to suggest below, and usually it's not worth their time to jump through the hoops: easier to just give you a partial refund.

But just in case. . .first see if they have the same size, and buy that at the lower price. Then return the more pricey one.

If they have it...it was on the sale rack, and I don't remember if they had another in this size. We'll see.

I agree, they know people do this; some places will just re-ring your purchase with the discount to get out of the hassle of restocking the returned one.

If that doesn't work... THEN buy the second dress, and later return the first one.

If all else fails, return the first dress, and then turn around and buy it again, if you can manage to guarantee that you'll be the one who gets it, somehow. Not sure how to guarantee that.

I've brought the dress and the card and the receipt with me to work, since so many people have said, "try it!" :)

Ask. Try. You have nothing to lose. They may say yes to keep you as a customer.

They did, and the amount I saved was more than the cost of the bra I got to wear with it! :D
