What's better than lamby goodness?
Dec. 28th, 2009 09:38 pmFREE lamby goodness!
I'm re-reading The Bastard of Istanbul, and it gave me a craving for the Turkish-Armenian food I never really grew up with, but have come to love as an adult. I wanted to make shish kebab for dinner tonight.
pierceheart and I hit Sevan Bakery in Watertown today to get some Armenian ingredients for various things, and then went to the grocery store for the bulk of what we needed. I was happy to see that boneless leg of lamb was on sale for a dollar less per pound than usual. When I went through the self-checkout, though, it rang up as full price. When I went to get it corrected at the customer service desk, I expected them to give me the difference. Instead, they gave me back all the money, since it was their error. SWEET! Free meat!
So, I made shish kebab with green peppers, onions, and tomatoes. I marinated the meat in olive oil, fresh lemon juice, oregano, aleppo pepper, and salt. The onions were pearl onions that I parboiled for three minutes to slip the skins off. The tomatoes were grape tomatoes. I strung the meat and squares of pepper on skewers, and broiled it. Did the same for onions and tomatoes. It all turned out perfectly. It went well with the stuffed grape leaves I got, and with the bulgur pilaf I made. We had baklava for dessert. FANTASTIC. This, my friends, is my soul food. YEAH.
