It's not actually about the groundhog, really. It's about the weather on cross-quarter days (Imbolc, Beltane, Lammas, and Samhain) traditionally being a counter-indicator of what the weather will be like until the following equinox or solstice. The equinoxes and solstices are direct indicators. So, if the weather on Feb. 2 is good, it's likely to suck until the spring equinox, and vice versa. Looks like we have a few more weeks of winter ahead. But if the weather on the spring equinox is good, it's likely to be good until May 1.
