Who has a kick-ass homemade hand cream?
Feb. 15th, 2010 03:12 pmWhy, I DO! :D
The other day at Lush, I almost bought a pot of their Charity Pot cream, because I've been wanting a nice, rich, thick, natural hand cream lately. I decided against it because the other stuff I needed there was about as much as I wanted to spend there at one time. And, I told myself, I could probably make my own.
Today, I grated some cocoa butter chunks and a tiny bit of beeswax, and melted them in a double boiler with some shea butter (the one I got was in slightly soft jar form) and some sweet almond oil. When they were melted completely, I put the top half of the double boiler onto a bowl of ice, and used a hand mixer with a balloon whisk attachment to whisk it. It got thicker and increased in volume over time. Eventually, it was white and floofy-looking. Unfortunately, it was too hard for the creamy texture I wanted. I melted it down again, added a little more almond oil, and tried again. Still too hard. I then re-melted and added a good splort or three more of the oil. That time, it was perfect. I added a couple drops each of rose and ylang-ylang oils, and a splash of good Penzey's vanilla extract. It smells mostly of cocoa butter, but a little bit of the oils and vanilla, which is just as I wanted it. The texture is rich and creamy and PERFECT. I also added in the contents of a Vitamin E capsule to help preserve it. Now, I'm waiting for an iodine-sanitized mason jar to dry so I can put it in there. Yay! This is so exciting! It's definitely my greatest beauty product success yet.
Next time I do this, I'll try to measure and record the measurements that work, so I can have an easy-to-follow recipe, and then I can possibly make some of this as gifts for friends and family.
