Can anyone recommend a music editing program that will allow me to take two long tracks, cut them to a length I choose, and then combine those cut bits into a single track? That's free? And won't make me download junk onto my computer when I download it?

Oh, and the music files are MP3s.

I paid for mine but it was well worth it. It's in the Roxio package of DVD-burning, ripping, movie creation, etc - their "suite". It's called "Sound Editor". I use it alllll the time, and it's easy to use.

I know I have heard of people using Audacity but I never figured it out myself.

Was Audacity not user-friendly, then?

Not for me, or maybe I just had trouble with the install? Either way, I never got it up & running.

I know other bellydancers use it so it can't be that hard to use.

Hmm. That makes two votes for Audacity. Thanks.

Sorry, I'm a Mac girl with GarageBand. But I've heard other PC users mention Audacity before without cursing.

I have use Audacity as well (but then I'm a bit of a power user So I think its pretty easy to use). The install I think is the hardest part. You have to also remember to add the LAME MP3 library in order to be able to export the edited audio file as an MP3.

Thanks for the tip about the MP3 library. I think I'm going to go with Audacity because it's had lots of recommendations, so I figure if I run into problems, I know plenty of people to ask for help. :)

Definitely audacity. Long time user, even messed with a bit of composition with it.

Also here to push Audacity. You will need the LAME encoder, but that's really the only trick part I've noticed in it.

For absolutely no setup whatsoever there's Myna, which is web based:
http://aviary.com/tools/myna . Never used it, though, so I don't know if it has those features.
