The dancer and the dance
Apr. 4th, 2010 03:34 pmSometimes, OK, fairly often, I don't feel like a real dancer. I am not a professional. I do not perform often. I only take one class, once a week. I don't practice anywhere near enough. I'm not innately talented. I am not technically proficient. Years of this sort of lackadaisical study have led me to improve, for sure. So has listening to belly dance music very often. Even so, though, I often feel like a fraud or a half-assed play-actor compared with my classmates.
Today, I listened to the music and played around with it before I even started trying to dance. Then I improvised a bit. Finally, after finding some interesting ideas in that playing-around, I started working on the choreography itself. I went through a portion of the music at a time, from beginning to end. I sometimes watched myself do a move in the mirror, and when I did, I saw a dancer. Go figure. :)
