[livejournal.com profile] pierceheart and I had our anniversary date last night. We went to see Blue Man Group for the first time. It was awesome! It was like watching an Einstürzende Neubauten show, if the guys from EN had gone to Clown College. I was practically jumping up and down in my seat when they were drumming on some big PVC pipes that they manipulated to produce different tones. No, that wasn't the Flopophone, which is also cool. And I was howling with laughter at some of the comedy. It's amazing how much they can do with physical comedy. Most physical comedy I see is obnoxious slapstick that focuses on the embarrassing or painful. This was actually funny. I also loved the end of the show, which featured the absolutely kickass song "Last Train to Trancentral" and made me want to dance. The venue wasn't great, and the enormous numbers of high school kids were a bit annoying, but the show was amazing.

Dinner was amazing, too. I started with a Hendricks dirty martini, and of course got JFK's lobster stew as a first course. SO good. It's basically very simple: lobster, milk, cream, butter, sherry, salt, pepper, and paprika. The awesome thing is that they cook the lobster shells in the broth to make it more lobsteriffic.

I had the duck with sweet potatoes, szechuan pepper, and grilled pineapple for an entree. The duck had lovely crispy skin and wasn't too fatty. The sauce was perfect with it. The sweet potatoes seemed to be mashed with apple juice or cider, which was awesome, better than the orange juice that's so damned ubiquitous with sweet potatoes. The grilled pineapple wasn't amazing, but I think they just managed to get a less-than-amazing fruit. We had sides of green onion and sea salt "tater tots" and sauteed spinach with garlic and hot peppers. The "tater tots" seemed to be chunks of potato that were first boiled and then deep fried. They were crisp and brown on the outside and creamy in the middle. MMM. [livejournal.com profile] pierceheart had the clams casino for a first course and the sirloin with marrow marchand de vin sauce for a main course. Both were delicious. We split the Indian pudding a la mode for dessert. It was a wonderful, light, custardy version, perfectly seasoned and heavenly.

I ended up taking home half my duck. I've got some of it in my lunch today (all I could fit in the bento box) and some leftover pad thai. Talk about delicious!

Isn't BMG awesome? I saw them years ago (back when I could handle the loud and the flashing). So, so clever :-)

Technically? Yes. However since it is currently in NC I don't think that counts.
