I just went to the eye doctor today for the first time in about seven years. It was interesting. I found out that my left eye has astygmatism. That is, for all of you normal-visioned people who've never had to deal with this stuff, that the curvature of my lens is fucked up. Not severely or anything, but enough that a correction for astygmatism in my glasses would make a significant difference. My current pair of glasses does not correct for astygmatism. Also, it is underpowered for me. I need more correction than I did seven years ago. I am wearing my current glasses right now, because I want to get myself accustomed to wearing glasses more often, I think. I probably SHOULD wear them more often. I would squint less. I'm just not used to seeing myself in glasses. Hmm.

For the record:

Weirdness!

You look cute in both. :) Besides..with the glasses you can do the "hot professor" look... ;)

Wear your glasses. They do look good on you.

However, if you hate glasses (I do, but it's not a vanity thing. It's about peripheral vision), people with the most severe of astigmatisms can and do wear contact lenses. I have whenever I could afford it (again, the astigmatism in both eyes is severe enough that my lenses have to be custom-made)since I was sixteen.

Yeah, the doctor did tell me that they "or anyone" could fit me for contacts if I should decide that I want them. For me it's partly vanity, but also partly the "meh, I have something on my face" feeling. I don't even really like wearing sunglasses, but I do because my eyes are pretty light-sensitive.

I figure what I'll do is this:

1. I will need glasses anyway, even if I get contacts, so I'll get the glasses.

2. I'll see how I feel about wearing them all the time, and how much my life is different being able to see that well all the time.

3. If the seeing becomes really important but the wearing of glasses is a pain, I'll go get fitted for contacts at some point.

1. I have gotten so used to my glasses I don't always remember they are on.

2. The look of glasses has come a long way in 7 years.

3. I got my LJ name from one of my pairs of glasses. A friend looked at them and said I looked "Library Sexy".

Wow, those really change your look

Not that I don't think you're gorgeous with and without, but it's a striking set of changes.

I know, it's weird how much it changes me! What strikes me the most is that without them, I look pretty much 100% like my mother's side of the family, particularly my mother's father's side. With the glasses, I look much more like my dad's relatives.

Wow, are you ever gorgeous!
This is the frame I use--but get it elsewhere, there are online discount frame sales sites--no lenses popping out (and my right eye's is quite thick, even in ultralight plastic), and best of all: easier on my face during a sinus-cenered headache or migraine!

I wouldn't have my lenses filled online due to needing special adjustments for the bifocal line. I tried progressives, but they had a smaller effective vision area, and I'd had enough of that after a few months.

Right! and get anti-glare coating, both sides if they don't usually do it that way.

I had 'em as a toddler, then stopped wearing them when I was a little older, then started again (sometimes) when I was 16.

Just remember there are many many types of lenses these days. Polymer, glass, etc. All have different weights and feeling. Contacts are the same. you may try 5 different types of contacts and not find what is right for you.

Personally I will always have contacts as my eyes are really photo sensitive. Then again I am the poster child for skin cancer so *I* am photo sensitive :)

Finally don't worry too much about looks. you look great with or without. Also you can have fun with glasses too. Get a set to match that great dress! you can have evening wear glasses if you so desire.

The good news is astigmatism is quite common (roughly 1 in 6). I also have astigmatism, and a good pair of glasses certainly improves one's vision. Contacts for astigmatism are more expensive than those which only correct myopia and hyperopia.

One thing I can tell you about contacts for astigmatism is that the contacts are weighted. This is so they maintain the proper rotational orientation on the cornea. Blinking will affect this orientation by rotating the contact lens from it's proper orientation, this results in slight blur. After a second or two the contact will rotate to re-establish it's correct orientation on the cornea and vision will again be sharp.

I wear contacts most of the time, and I have astigmatism, though not a severe one. If you're concerned about the glare of your glasses, you can get special anti-glare lenses.

Yeah, I might spring for anti-glare this time around. Though I think in general I will still be a "glasses off for pictures" person. :) My astigmatism (why did I think it had a y?) is not severe either.

It might have a y, I can't spell.

I take my glasses off for pictures.

I don't need special contacts, btw, in spite of my astigmatism. I get the ones you throw out every 2 weeks.

I only use my glasses if there is a good reason, like I'm very tired or on a plane or my eyes are irritated. Or I'm running low on lenses.

There's nothing done to it, there. I just stopped perming it in grad school!
