Wow. Some

Friday night was just me relaxing at home and cleaning the bathroom. Nice.

Saturday afternoon, I had a picnic with my friend Jason C. We got food at Whole Foods and a bottle of wine at Marty's, and took the lot up to the Charles River in Cambridge, where we had a very very pleasant time. Snuggling and picnicking in the sun is quite enjoyable with good company.

Saturday night was fun. Went to a birthday party for J, who's looking beautifully pregnant and wore a red boa for the occasion. We played pool and ate yummy food. I got four free beers, three of which were Skullsplitters that not only failed to split my skull, but didn't even really get me drunk. The bartender spilled ice water in my lap. Then the other bartender showed off by tossing the full glass up in the air and behind his back without spilling a drop. It was cool.

Sunday morning I got up late, but managed to make it into Harvard Square before [livejournal.com profile] erik_j_meyer and [livejournal.com profile] dee_cee, who were held up by traffic and lack of parking. I bought yarn—yay! I decided it's not too late to re-start the baby blanket for J's soon-to-be-born little one. Now it's going to be striped pale blue and cream. We went to Hootenanny afterwards. [livejournal.com profile] dee_cee tried on a fabu vinyl dress (did you get it, chica?) and I found a fabu skirt. Black satin brocade with a black tulle tail and pouf on the back. Is that what they call a hobble skirt? The ones that fit you right at the waist but squeeze your legs together really tight so you can barely walk? Anyway, it was cute.

Sunday night was...simply the most amazing thing ever. Or one of them. There really is nothing else in the entire world like an Einsturzende Neubauten concert. Nothing. I was right in front, with my friend Mike right behind me. The boys took forever to come out. When they did, they were in rare form. Instead of starting with music as they usually do, Blixa chatted with the audience for a bit, joking and smiling and just generally being lighthearted and fun. When they did break into the music, it was with their customary attitude of sheer delight in what they do, the kind of joy you see on the face of a little kid who's just discovered what a loud noise he can make when he bangs a wooden spoon on a saucepan. Alex Hacke, the bassist, played like a heavy metal musician who’s discovered subtlety and decided he likes it—to an extent. Percussionist Rudi Moser played his usual pretty-boy showy attitude to the hilt: arrogant, but adorable. Endruh Unruh, percussionist and instrument-creating-genius, was like a little elf, jumping around and making light of the enormous pieces of metal he whacked with such precision. Ash Wednesday, on keyboard, injected his dry Australian wit into the performance while stroking subtle ethereal harmonies out of the keys. Jochen Arbeit was alternately cool and impassioned, torturing the most exquisitely unreal sounds out of his guitar. He glanced at me several times during the concert. I would have thought it was random, but twice, he caught my eye and smiled at me. Were it not for the impediment of an olive-toned skin, I’d have blushed. :) And then there was Blixa. *Sigh* Blixa is now 45, but with every passing year he gets more and more beautiful. Tall. Big blue eyes. Lush, sexy lips. Hands that just make me shiver when I look at them. Oh, and the voice: low baritone, musical, and richly accented in the way that made me realize German can be sexy. He was at his very best. He has that rare quality that Johnny Depp has of combining sexy, eccentric, whimsical, and awesomely talented. I could write volumes. The audience was amazing as well. It’s so unusual and somehow special that they should be so respectful towards a band, to the point of a hushed but happy silence between numbers. It was a silence we all listened to, since the band long ago taught us to listen for the sounds in silence and appreciate them. After playing one of their best-known signature pieces, a song that tells the story of the band’s philosophical history, Blixa announced, “If you don’t love that one, you don’t love us at all!” A girl called out, “We love you!” It didn’t sound like the gushing of a groupie, but like pure, sweet affection. We all loved them, and they loved us. My gods, I could go on and on about the whispering depths and thundering crescendos to which they brought us last night, but it’s really impossible to describe in full. I will just say this: if you ever get the chance to see Einsturzende Neubauten play live, do not pass up that opportunity. They are magicians, and they cast a spell unlike any other.

Then comes this morning. I got an e-mail from Dan. Apparently, Morgan wrote to him without telling me, I guess as a surprise, and Dan sent me an e-mail at his behest. He’s back in the US. I feel so weird. I hardly know what to say. Well, more like, I have no idea where to begin. There’s just so much. I feel weird. Yep. I will talk more about this when I’ve had some interaction with him. I just can’t say anything right now. It’s too weird. But he’s alive, safe, and home, and for that I am grateful.

Wow!

Sounds like a wonderful weekend!

I'm glad. The band sounds intriguing. I may have to check them out sometime...And German can be a very sexy language. I'd love to learn to speak it. (Along with several other languages, that is!)

That was very sweet of Morgan. BEYOND sweet. I'm glad you're back in touch with Dan. I know how much that means to you.

*HUGS!*

Thanks :)

DO check out EN. They are amazing. http//www.neubauten.org is their website. I fell head over heels for them about five years ago, and love them to this day. I've never had a favorite band for this long.

I am VERY happy that you are now able to contact Dan and know that he is OK. There is nothing worse than not knowing where someone is or how they're doing.

I am also happy to hear that you, too, had some good outdoors time. After the winter we've had I feel sun-starved and now run around the apartment like a three year old when the weather's nice because I so want to go out and play.

Your passion for EN totally shines through and your description of Blixa made me hot. I am so checking out their website.

Enjoy your week!

Oh yes, Blixa is a hot one. :) I had to be very careful about not asking his wife for juicy details when we talked. ;)
